About the Department
The Department of Nuclear Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate
degrees in Nuclear Engineering. We are the only nuclear engineering program in
the state of North Carolina and one of the premier departments in the
southeast United States. The Carolinas currently contributes to the
advancement of the nuclear enterprise regionally, nationally and
internationally. The State of North Carolina has accepted new/updated energy
policy with accelerated clean energy strategy to achieve net-zero complete
transition by 2050, which include the nuclear energy as part of clean energy
mix. The State of North Carolina is also committed to expanding engineering
education and research including the expansion of COE at NCSU to address the
growing need of advanced engineering skill in emerging areas.
Nationally and internationally the United States is leading the clean energy
economy of the future with initiatives across a range of sectors and all
stages of innovation: research, development, and deployment. The advanced
nuclear reactor technology will be an important contributor to a decarbonized
power sector and net zero future. Moving to a net-zero economy would create
millions of new jobs worldwide by 2030 across energy, construction, and
automotive sectors, 65% of which will be high-skilled jobs. The United States
is committed to realizing not only the emissions reductions potential, but
also the economic growth and jobs creation opportunities across key sectors.
Through collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, NC State's Nuclear
Engineering Department is increasing its footprint on the national and global
level in both advanced nuclear energy developments and implementations and
state-of-the-art nuclear science and engineering applications in emerging
technological and digital engineering areas.
With an increasing faculty population and research areas/projects, there is
greater opportunity for learning in the broad areas of advanced nuclear
reactor engineering, radiation detection and admeasurements, nuclear
materials, security and non-proliferation, computational science and digital
engineering, plasma science and engineering, radiological and waste
engineering, and advanced nuclear applications in emerging high-technology,
bioengineering and digital engineering areas.

Essential Job Duties
The Reactor Dynamics and Fuel Modeling Group (RDFMG), established at the
Nuclear Engineering Department of North Carolina State University (NCSU),
has expertise and experience in developing, validation, and application of
methodologies in core neutronics, core and system thermal-hydraulics, and
coupled neutronics/thermal-hydraulics/fuel performance calculations. Efforts
have been towards development and application of calculation schemes for
multi-physics multi-scale simulations for advanced reactor design and safety
analyses supplemented by validation & verification and uncertainty
We are offering a position for a Research Scholar in relation to the reactor
fuel modeling and physics work done in RDFMG. This position is funded by Drs.
Jason (Jia) Hou and Kostadin Ivanov and is contingent upon the continued
availability of this funding. This appointment is “at-will,” with continuation
or discontinuation at the discretion of the Dean/Vice Chancellor. At present,
funding for this position is expected to be available for a period not to
exceed 36 months.
This position will be responsible for supporting fuel performance, multi-scale
and multi-physics fuel modeling and simulation, verification and validation
and uncertainty quantification including utilization of experimental data and
developing corresponding benchmarks, advanced fuel design and safety analyses,
and other related research on using data science and analytics within on-going
projects, helping prepare proposals and project reports/presentations,
publishing peer-reviewed papers in these areas, and assisting the above-
mentioned faculty in working with graduate and undergraduate students.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Serving as lead or Co-lead researcher or individual contributor on
Directing projects or components of highly complex large-scale programs
Overseeing development of, and monitors integrity of, data collection
Serving as co-investigator on a funded research project or principal
investigator on moderate to large research project(s)
Obtaining, or assisting in obtaining, external research funding including
Authoring and/or co-authoring publications and presenting and/or co-
presenting results with Principal Investigator at meetings and/or
Preparing and reviewing peer-reviewed journal and conference proceedings
Developing new/novel techniques; and design and apply scientific and
Becoming a member of the Graduate School to serve on graduate students'
thesis committee and advise graduate students
Overseeing non-exempt and exempt researchers and support staff
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
Relevant Ph.D degree (or relevant terminal degree), or relevant Master's
degree with at least 5 years of formal post-degree professional work
experience. In rare instances, an individual with a comparable professional
experience but less than a master's degree, plus 8 years of exceptional
relevant professional experience. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Other Required Qualifications
Ability to serve as lead or Co-lead researcher or individual contributor
on one or more projects and lead national and international research
Ability to author and/or co-author publications and present and/or co-
present results at meetings and/or conferences
Ability to develop new/novel techniques; and design and apply scientific
and numerical models. Ability to advise undergraduate and graduate
Ability to oversee non-exempt and exempt researchers
Ability to support education computer projects and short graduate courses
Ability to utilize, improve, verify and validate advanced multi-scale fuel
performance and multi-physics high-fidelity and traditional modeling and
simulations tools for nuclear engineering design and safety analyses
Ability to utilize available experimental data and results from high-
fidelity tools to develop and perform international validation benchmarks
Apply high-to-low model fidelity information in fuel performance and
multiphysics along with verification, validation and uncertainty
quantification and propagation
