Occupational Summary:

The Director for the Undergraduate Research Support (URS) will provide day- to-day leadership for the URS Office within the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. The Director will be a creative thinker and visionary who, working with partners across campus, will aim to provide all Duke students equal access and motivation to complete a mentored research experience. The Director must be a dynamic leader that understands the research landscape for undergraduates at a R1 university, can establish broad faculty participation, collaborates well with units across the University, and understands the diverse backgrounds and needs of undergraduate students. The Director will supervise and work collaboratively with the URS Program Coordinator and will report to the Dean of Academic Affairs for Trinity College.

Program Management (60%)

Create a vision and plan to educate and engage all students in undergraduate research, including a robust vision for an introductory undergraduate experience that exposes students to the concept of research and its value in different disciplinary fields

Identify and make legible the many connections between different undergraduate research opportunities on campus and credit-bearing opportunities within the Trinity curriculum

Lead small committees of readers designed to promote, evaluate, and award various URS student research grants

Collaborate with other academic enrichment programs

Organize annual Visible Thinking Symposium highlighting awardees research findings and identify national and international conference opportunities for students to present

Identify internal and external funding opportunities for undergraduate student research

Develop systems and structures that strengthen graduate and undergraduate mentor/mentee relationships through research

Work closely with the Trinity Assessment team to capture critical data surrounding undergraduate research experiences

Contribute to the already robust natural and quantitative science research landscape, while building scalable initiatives to bolster research opportunities in the social sciences and humanities

Communications (20%)

Create and maintain a communications plan

Create and maintain collegial relationships with a campus wide network of faculty, staff, and administrators to promote mentored research opportunities for undergraduates and celebrate student successes

Maintain URS website, and create alternative avenues for improved undergraduate online experience (i.e. student features, upcoming events, research opportunities, etc.)

Develop advising strategies that center the student experience, and act as conduit for wide-ranging research initiatives across campus

Supervision (10%)

Work collaboratively with the Program Coordinator to ensure that the URS office is a vibrant and recognizable stand-alone space on campus via programming, communications, and new initiatives.

Budget Management (10%)

Manage URS operating budget, and design equitable and thoughtful criteria for disbursement of annual grant monies in alignment with the mission of the office.

Minimum Qualifications Education

Master's degree in social sciences or similar curricula preferred.

Experience

Minimum of three years of related program evaluation experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
