FLSA Non-Exempt Job Family Research And Lab FTE 1.00 Minimum Qualifications

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Research and/or extension experience in applied horticulture and/or disease management of horticultural crops desired. Experience with laboratory and field research equipment is highly desired.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for assisting and supporting the Assistant Professor of Horticulture in Griffin with applied research and extension programs. Assist with setting up and overseeing field trials, greenhouse, and laboratory applied research in cooperation with industry and CAES faculty. Perform greenhouse maintenance and any additional activities as required, including but not limited to potting media, planting, fertilization, and irrigation. Collect data from field, greenhouse, and laboratory studies and subject this data to appropriate statistical analyses. Applied research will involve outdoor field studies and work in greenhouses. Maintain and accurately keep an inventory of supplies, chemicals, and pesticides for the program while making sure the program PI stays in full compliance with UGA, EPD, and EPA regulations governing the storage and usage of these materials.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Have the ability to work independently and conduct field and laboratory research. Willing to travel, including overnight, to address disease and horticultural issues as they occur.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Field, laboratory, and greenhouse research. Include manual labor, equipment operations and data collection. Coordinate and collaborate in field and greenhouse research activities with Field Research Services and Branch Station personnel. Coordinate and collaborate in laboratory research activities.

Percentage of time 40 Duties/Responsibilities

Supervise, coordinate, and collaborate with activities, students, and part- time personnel in accomplishing design, establishment, data collection and analysis of results from field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments.

Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities

Purchasing and procuring materials for research projects as it relates to the policies and procedures of Procurement.

Responsible for maintenance of program vehicles and farm equipment.

Responsible for safety and related issues for research programs. Modify field and laboratory experimental procedures and inform project leader of changes when necessary. Work with other local and regional extension specialist and professors.
