About the College/Unit/Department

In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community. Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia. In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

This position is located in Tifton, GA, which is approximately 200 miles southwest of Athens, Georgia, 200 miles south of Atlanta, GA and approximately 70 miles north of the Florida line.

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

This position conducts research on genetic mapping, tissue culture, and marker-assisted selection in the molecular breeding of peanuts, particularly for resistance to aflatoxin contamination. Laboratory analyses will require culture of Aspergillus, inoculation of seeds or other plant parts with fungi, extraction of nucleic acids or aflatoxin, cultivation of plants and collection of samples from field and greenhouse. Tasks also include field data collection, laboratory data collection, troubleshooting of experiments, data entry, data analysis and others assigned by supervisor.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Tissue and seed collection and sample preparation – preparation of solutions and media; initiation/maintenance of tissue cultures; regeneration of plants from tissue cultures.

Percentage of time 40 Duties/Responsibilities

Sample and data collection – will consist of sample collection in laboratory, greenhouse and field; molecular assays in the laboratory (nucleic acid extraction and PCR); measurement of plant characteristics in greenhouse and field – morphological, reproductive, disease responses; confocal and light microscopy.

Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities

Data analysis – entry of data into spreadsheets, data sorting, data processing-all computational; uses high level of organization and attention to detail.

Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities

Data reporting using spreadsheets, document or presentation formats.

Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities

Planting, harvest and plant maintenance – primarily consists of manual planting in the greenhouse or in small plots for replication tests in the field. Plant maintenance in the greenhouse involves some weekend/holiday greenhouse responsibilities.
