About the College/Unit/Department

In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community. Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia. In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

This position is located in Tifton, GA, which is approximately 200 miles southwest of Athens, Georgia, 200 miles south of Atlanta, GA and approximately 70 miles north of the Florida line.

Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications

MS Degree in plant biology, microbiology, plant pathology, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology or related area.

Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide operations assistance with plant disease diagnosis studies experiments using a wide range of advanced molecular detection approaches (eg. PCR, reverse transcriptase PCR, real-time PCR, LAMP, ELISA, and/or other contemporary procedures) on plant samples affected by bacteria, fungi, viruses, or nematodes. Research activities will be conducted in the lab, and greenhouse, and research data will be presented in scientific conference and peer-review journals.

The successful applicant will conduct experiments on the development of advanced diagnostic methods for rapid and confident identification of plant diseases due to virus, bacteria or fungus using next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. They will be expected to conduct lab and greenhouse experiments under the supervision of Dr. Oliver. The incumbent is expected to take a leadership role in data collection, data analysis, and compiling manuscripts for publication in appropriate journals. They may also be expected to work closely with different key industry stakeholders, and could be involved in supervising undergraduates. The incumbent will also be expected to present results at local and national conferences.

Research Assistance in the lab and greenhouse: Sample collection, DNA/RNA extraction and conduct PCR, real-time PCR, LAMP, ELISA, and electrophoresis, statistic data analysis
