The University of Queensland School of Biomedical Sciences is a distinguished centre for teaching and research in the academic disciplines of Anatomy, Developmental Biology, Physiology, Pharmacology and Pathology. The School has more than 40 full-time research and teaching staff and is one of the largest Schools of its type in Australia. It has links to other prestigious research centres on the St Lucia campus including the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), the Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN). Our diverse research provides an exciting environment for national and international research fellows and higher degree students. It is concerned with advancing the understanding of how cellular mechanisms contribute to the function of the human body in health and disease.

About the opportunity

The Research Officer (RO) will be responsible for a framework of internal, collaborative and contracted research projects. This includes research publications, study plan writing, data analysis and report writing as well as presentations, student supervision and other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor or senior staff.

You will also be working closely with the Study Coordinator/Director and senior staff to ensure appropriate experimental designs, strong collaborator/sponsor communications and adherence to the project timelines.

The RO is required to perform hands-on laboratory works and to contribute to other research activities in the laboratory, include but are not limited to general housekeeping, and occasional rostered weekend/after-hours work.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia's most attractive university campuses. The position reports to Deputy Head of School, School of Biomedical Sciences, and is supervised day to day by the Emeritus Professor, School of Biomedical Sciences.

Our ideal candidate

You will hold a PhD in a relevant scientific field with expertise in the following areas:

 Small animal handling.
 Test item administration (e.g. subcutaneous and intraperitoneal dosing)
 Small animal surgery (e.g. low back pain, Intracerebroventricular cannula implantation).
 Preclinical pain behavioural testing (e.g. mechanical allodynia, hyperalgesia, constipation, respiratory depression).
 Perfusion and necropsy.

Additionally, you will possess:

  • An emerging profile in research in the discipline area.

  • Proven experience in efficiently planning and execution of experiments including the preparation of study plans and the drafting of reports.

  • Evidence of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
  • Highly developed teamwork excellent oral and written communication skills in English and well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • It is a condition of employment for this role that you will be required to provide evidence of immunisation against certain vaccine preventable diseases.

    What we can offer

    This is a full-time fixed term position until 30 August 2023 at Academic Level A.

    The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $70,729.74 - $94,637.91 per annum plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $82,753.80 - $110,726.35 per annum.
