Job Summary

A Research Lab Technician Intermediate position is available in the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology (MCTP), under the direction of Arul Chinnaiyan, MD, PhD. We are seeking an energetic, highly motivated individual to assist us in our projects focused on cancer biology and therapeutics. The candidate will perform routine laboratory experimental procedures in one or more areas of work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. At MCTP, we are committed to development of novel therapeutic agents involved in a wide variety of diseases, including prostate cancer, pediatric cancer pancreatic cancer, and lung cancer.

Responsibilities
  • Routine cell culture maintenance: passaging of adherent and suspension cells, freezing and recovering cell lines.
  • In vitro high throughput screening of small molecule: determine and calculation of IC50 in 96 well formats, incucyte assay and crystal violet staining.
  • Functional assay: Protein and RNA extraction from cells and tumor tissue, western blotting, confocal microscopy, qPCR, cell migration and invasion assay.
  • In vivo work: basic mouse handling skills such as restraint of various strains of mice, ear tagging of young and adult mice; establish various tumor models such as tumor cell injection by subcutaneous, tail vein, intracardiac; tumor measuring through digital caliper or bioluminescent imaging; therapeutic drug preparation and dosing through different routes such as oral gavage, intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, tail vein; perform animal necropsy and tissue/organ collection.
  • Immunohistochemistry: processing of fixed tissues and diverse staining procedures.
  • Train and manage undergraduate research students.
  • Maintain lab equipment and organize sample inventory.
  • Draft and maintain lab protocols.
  • Required Qualifications
  • BS degree in cell/molecular biology or similar field.
  • Two to three years of relevant experience in cancer research.
  • Experience in mammalian cell culture, nucleic acid and protein isolation, qPCR, western blotting.
  • Experiences in drug efficacy/therapeutic studies.
  • Basic mouse handling skills.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent documentation skills for research results.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Willing to have some schedule flexibility and occasionally work on weekends.
  • Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety and ability to work carefully with potentially harmful agents.
  • Ability to function independently as well as a team member in a team setting.
  • Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new and innovate processes.
  • Maintain detailed records of bench work and in vivo work on notebook and online database.
  • Familiar with Microsoft office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), GraphPad Prism, PubMed or other literature search portals.

    Background Screening

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
