The cover letter should be included in the same document as your resume and
address your interest in this position and outline particular skills and
experience directly related to this position.
This position focuses on chemical analyses of biological and environmental
samples for organic compounds primarily using GC-MS/MS and LC-MS. These
analyses support a range of cutting-edge occupational, epidemiological and
environmental studies investigating trace level organic contaminants, such as
PBDEs, PCBs, dioxins, pesticides, PFOS, and other compounds, in biological
samples (e.g., blood and urine), and environmental samples (e.g., air and
water). These analyses support important studies conducted across multiple
units at the University of Michigan (e.g., Engineering, Public Health,
Medical School) that are investigating risk factors that affect human and
ecological health. The qualified candidate must be capable of performing
trace-level chemical analyses and developing methods for emerging compounds.
The candidate will be involved in multiple on-going projects and will provide
oversight of day-to-day operation of laboratory operations. Working knowledge
of analytical methods and quality assurance / quality control is required
along with good communication and organizational skills.
Perform analytical determinations, including GC/MS peak identification and
quantification and prepare analytical data reports and data interpretation.
Develop and validate analytical methods, including performing analytical
Perform QA/QC activities including impurity identification, stability studies,
and cleaning verifications, including standards and perform calibrations.
Develop and maintain SOPs, sample tracking, and instrument records, and assist

Minimum qualification of a Bachelor's degree in recognized field of science
directly related to the position.
Working knowledge of analytical method development and validation, analytical
instrumentation, and equipment.
Experience with software and information systems (e.g., ChemStation, Excel).
Hands-on experience as an analytical chemist with GC-MS and/or LC-MS, as well
as traditional wet chemistry methods (titration, lipids).
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the
qualifications of the selected candidate. The Research Laboratory Specialist
