Job Summary

The Department of Neurology is currently seeking a Research Laboratory Specialist Intermediate to work in a basic and translational neuroscience laboratory. The overarching goals of the laboratory are to (1) determine how and why neurons die in the neurodegenerative diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia, (2) identify therapeutic strategies that can block neuronal dysfunction and cell death in these conditions, and (3) investigate the neurobiology of aging to improve longevity and neuronal survival. The successful candidate will work alongside Dr. Barmada and existing lab members to design, perform, and interpret experiments with these objectives in mind.

  • Training users in equipment operation and standard techniques
  • Training new students and/or research assistants
  • Participating and assisting in the renewal of animal protocols, lab safety protocols, and other research practice-oriented protocols
  • Maintaining collaborations with outside investigators
  • Participating in periodic research discussions
  • Presenting data and discussing plans for new experiments
  • Helping to assemble manuscripts, chapters, and research abstracts
  • Promoting a productive, respectful, inclusive, and pleasant work environment

  • Required Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in molecular biology, neuroscience, biochemistry or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 4 years of related experience.
  • The qualified incumbent will be expected to be experienced in basic and advanced molecular biology and cell biology techniques including gene cloning, protein isolation, DNA/RNA extraction and purification, quantitative real-time PCR, sequencing, primer design and mutagenesis using PCR, fluorescence microscopy, animal maintenance and breeding, and tissue culturing.
  • A large part of the work in the laboratory involves culturing primary neurons and/or human stem cell derived neurons, and incumbents will be expected to be proficient in neuron dissection, maintenance, differentiation and transfection.
  • Applicants should be reliable and able to work congenially alongside a group of equally hard-working scientists.
  • Desired Qualifications
  • Masters degree in molecular biology, neuroscience, biochemistry or a related discipline.
  • Background Screening
