Job Summary

The University of Michigan, Department of Pediatrics is seeking candidates for a Research Investigator position in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonology.

Basic functions and responsibilities

Under direct supervision of the Principal Investigator perform scientific research in the field of pediatric hematology, studying the genetics of blood clotting disorders using zebrafish models. Participate in a leadership role supervising junior research staff and support personnel. Participate in extra- mural grant writing and academic authorship.

Duties and responsibilities:

Data Collection & Analysis (40% effort)

  • Develop, design and conduct complex experiments according to plan and protocols
  • Injection, manipulation, and characterization of zebrafish embryos
  • Basic and complex molecular biology techniques (PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA cloning)
  • Review results with PI and suggest options for improving procedures and research protocols
  • Collect, analyze, and process research data
  • Work in collaboration with Principal Investigator on assigned projects
  • Use genome editing to develop mutant models
  • Verify gene expression through RNA analysis
  • Analyze phenotypes of mutant fish lines
  • Conduct and analyze laser injury experiments
  • Independently develop or adapt new protocols
  • Contributions to Research and Design (40% effort)

  • Provide support according to overall project goals as developed by Principal Investigator
  • Participate actively in lab meetings and discussions of science
  • Develop, design, and conduct research projects according to plans & protocols
  • Suggest options for improvement to research methods
  • Develop and troubleshoot laboratory techniques
  • Design and maintain lab data files
  • Literature Search/Writing (10%)

  • Write first draft of, review, and edit manuscripts
  • Prepare reports
  • Assist in literature searches and give input for preparation of grant proposals and manuscripts
  • Laboratory oversight (10%)

  • Trains students, technicians, graduate students and post docs in standard operating procedures, techniques, explains and demonstrates instrument capabilities, operations, limitations and outcomes
  • Train others in laboratory techniques
  • Share in laboratory duties with staff in laboratory, including maintenance of fish facility
  • Supervision Received:

    Direction is received from Dr. Shavit, Principal Investigator. Staff members in this classification are expected to work independently and in collaboration with other laboratory personnel, regularly exercise good judgment in setting priorities, resolving operational problems, and the application of policies, procedures and methods.

    Supervision Exercised:

    Functional and administrative supervision may be exercised over any research or support personnel.

    Required Qualifications
  • M.D. or Ph.D. with at least 4-5 years of substantial research experience in molecular biology, genetics and/or developmental biology, and hematology
  • High level of expertise in principles of molecular biology, including PCR, cloning, and hematology research
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • S/he must also be capable of taking initiative, work independently and in a collaborative setting
  • Excellent attendance, ability to multi-task, prioritize appropriately handle a stressful environment and exercise good judgment is a must
  • Must have at least 4-5 years prior experience working with zebrafish
  • Desired Qualifications
  • Substantial research experience preferably in molecular biology, genetics and/or developmental biology
  • Prior experience working in the fields of hemostasis, thrombosis, or vascular biology
  • Prior experience in computer programming or bioinformatics
  • Prior experience working with mice
  • Familiarity with University research administration, policies and procedures
  • Background Screening
