Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Chemistry at North Carolina A&T State University, College of Science and Technology, invites applications for Research Instrumentation Coordinator. This position will be responsible for managing laboratory equipment, handling their proper maintenance including preventive and scheduled maintenance, training and proper scheduling of instrumentation users, handling supplies procurement, planning chemical and biotechnology experiments, assisting students and other researchers in carrying out laboratory procedures and making changes/adjustments in experiments as needed/required. The position requires a close interaction with faculty researcher and student and post doctoral researchers in assisting the design of their research protocol.
The selected candidate is also expected to provide instrument-specific training to users prior to using the facilities. In this regard, the selected candidate is expected to prepare instruction summary, and as part of the Chemistry curriculum, will also run informal short courses and training seminars on various topics of spectroscopic instrumentations. In addition, developing and maintaining protocol for reserving instrument time for internal and external users is part of the routine operation of the candidate in addition to developing laboratory fee protocol for outside users.
The range of assistance to researchers includes, project planning, experimental design, developing methodology, conducting and modifying procedures as needed, data collection and analysis, laboratory management, project management. The position will closely work with graduate students and assist their research progress as well as closely assisting and monitoring undergraduate researchers. Work may include the training and supervision of staff, students and others in performing specific techniques or phases of experiments. Employee in this position should understand the context and implications of the research in order to apply and interpret theoretical knowledge necessary to conduct research in one or more scientific disciplines.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an 1890 land- grant doctoral Research University dedicated to learning, discovery, and community engagement. The College of Science and Technology enrolls 2184 students. It is a national leader that serves and engages the citizens of the state of North Carolina, the nation, and the world through preeminence in science and technology education, research, discovery, and innovation. The College houses the departments of Applied Engineering Technology, Biology, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Systems Technology, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, and the Ph.D. Program of Applied Science Technology. The College is experiencing substantial growth in enrollment, faculty size, curricula, and research.
The Department of Chemistry's primary function is teaching, research and service to students and the larger community. The Department is currently operating with 16 full-time tenure track faculty to support teaching and research needs of the undergraduate and graduate students. The Undergraduate Chemistry program is approved by the American Chemical Society (ACS). The undergraduate enrollment currently is >100 Chemistry majors. A PhD program in Applied Science and Technology (AST) has started enrolling students and the department trains PhD students as part of the AST program in Applied Chemistry. The current graduate enrollment is 20 with 12 students enrolled in the AST PhD program in Applied Chemistry. The remaining graduate students are working for the MS degree. Overall, the Department of Chemistry has been building its research Capacity and has acquired several state-of-the –art research instruments.
The collection of recently acquired instrumentation includes 400 MHz nmr instrument with solid state capability; Inductively Coupled Plasma- Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES); An FTIR Microscope; Rigaku Bench top powder X-ray Diffraction; Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS); Ellipsometry; a N2 Pulsed Laser spectrophotometry; and a host of other instrumentations used for high level research and teaching purposes. The selected candidate will handle the day to day operations of these instruments and maintain their readiness for research. In addition, the instrumentation director will assist the researchers in planning and coordinating the execution of their research projects, while leading and/or cooperating in all proposals involving obtaining advanced new instrumentations.
Minimum Requirements
MS in Chemistry or Engineering and Experience in handling major research instrumentations including NMR, ICP, spectroscopic instruments and/or electron microscopes
