The primary location of this position is on the main Cullowhee, NC campus.

Western Carolina University's Hunter Library seeks a Reference & Instruction Librarian/Education Liaison to join its engaged, student-centered, and service-oriented faculty in the Research and Instruction Services department.

The librarian in this position provides a full range of user education, reference, outreach, and collection development services including in-depth research assistance to students and faculty in the School of Teaching and Learning and the Department of Human Services. The person in this position will also work in conjunction with and supervise one full-time staff member in the Curriculum Materials Center and provide general reference assistance.

All RIS librarians at Hunter Library provide interdisciplinary research assistance and library instruction during weekdays, evenings, and limited weekends, and build an ongoing familiarity of the disciplines and library resources for all fields of study. RIS librarians participate in a dynamic information literacy instruction program (in Cullowhee, at WCU instructional sites, and online); develop online guides and tutorials; support research via programming, outreach, and consultations; contribute to the development, review, and management of collections and research tools; and collaborate with colleagues in library-wide decision-making and initiatives. All faculty participate in scholarship and service appointments. The successful candidate will be intellectually curious, flexible, and up to the challenge of serving a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate programs.

All library employees assume responsibility for additional duties, projects, assignments, and initiatives as needed or assigned.

This is a 12-month, tenure-track position, reporting to the RIS department head. Position is available immediately. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. 24 days of annual vacation leave. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position

• Academic or professional background in education • Experience providing reference assistance to library users • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication • Knowledge of a wide range of information tools and sources and a creative, persistent approach to finding authoritative information • Desire to learn and practice the craft of reference in all subject areas • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills • Demonstrated understanding of principles and best practices of information literacy instruction • Ability to work productively, both independently and as a part of a team • Time management and organizational skills to balance a varied workload, including scholarship and service • Strong commitment to public service • Initiative to provide outreach to students, faculty, and other constituencies • Flexibility to adapt and respond to the ever-changing landscape of information services in an academic library

Minimum Qualifications

• MLS from ALA-accredited program of library or information science or international equivalent

Preferred Qualifications

• Research support experience in a library setting;

• Supervisory experience;

• Experience creating online guides and tutorials;

• Classroom teaching experience;

• Academic or professional background in education;

• Experience in a K-12 environment;

• Recent experience and/or documented training in assessment and evaluation of library activities.
