This position will increase the competitiveness of academic research at the University of Idaho (UofI) by facilitating the discovery, organization, analysis, and presentation of data related to the overall UofI research enterprise. This position will help elucidate information and trends related to research expenditures, outputs, and impacts. In turn, this will empower academic and administrative leaders at the UofI to make better-informed strategic decisions on priorities, resource allocation, and investments in alignment with opportunities and initiatives at the federal level. This technical and administrative position will develop and communicate a holistic understanding of the UofI's data ecosystem related to research activity and impacts. The position will work collaboratively with staff and leadership from IIDS, Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED), Institutional Research, Office of Information Technology (OIT), the Library, and various colleges and departments.

The Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Sciences (IIDS) is a research institute within the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) at the University of Idaho. The mission of IIDS is to empower researchers to fully harness the potential of the data revolution by provisioning and administering critical University research infrastructure related to genomics, bioinformatics, research computing, and data science. IIDS houses three service units including Research Computing and Data Services (RCDS), the Genomics and Bioinformatics Resources Core (GBRC), and the Initiative for Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Studies (IBEST) and is a vibrant home for interdisciplinary research for student, postdoc, and faculty participants. IIDS participants can access expertise and infrastructure, support for proposal development and grants management, and training and professional development activities.

Position Qualifications

Required Experience

  • 3 years of experience working with databases, metadata, and web-based information management systems
  • Programming in one or more computer languages commonly used in data science (e.g., Python, R, Julia, MATLAB)
  • Designing and using relational databases, including demonstrated experience with writing SQL queries
  • Developing and presenting data visualizations in static and interactive formats to communicate analyses, methods, and results
  • Collecting, organizing, and managing large data sets
  • Using APIs and web scraping tools to develop and connect large interoperable databases.
  • Working with computer and data security issues
  • Working both independently and within a team managing multiple projects with competing deadlines
  • Experience proactively organizing computer and database systems
  • Leading diverse teams to solve distributed problems
  • Required Education

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Required Other Additional Preferred

  • A bachelor's degree or post-bachelor's degree in data science, data engineering, data analytics, computer science, business analytics, management information systems (MIS), statistics, mathematics, software engineering, or informatics
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with peers and coworkers on complex research and technology issues in both group and individual settings
  • Understanding of and experience with institutional research data
  • Experience with the following technologies:

  • Web Development with HTML, CSS, Javascript as well as PHP or Python
  • Understanding of common metadata standards and practices
  • Web service Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
  • JSON, XML, XSLT, and related tools
  • UNIX operating systems, especially Linux.
  • Software configuration and versioning tools such as: Git/GitHub, Subversion, etc.
  • Experience in a higher education institutional research setting

  • Ability to think clearly under pressure
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people
  • Knowledge and understanding of computer security and compliance frameworks such as CMMC and NIST
  • Experience writing IT programming specifications
  • Experience in handling confidential information
  • Experience Working in a UNIX/Linux command line environment
  • Experience with using high performance computing environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills as demonstrated in application materials
  • Self-motivated, team-oriented attitude as demonstrated in application materials
