interplay between viruses and peroxisomes: uncovering new targets for
antiviral therapy (PTDC/BIA-CEL/31378/2017, POCI-01-0145-FEDER-031378),
financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology/MCTES,
through national funds, and by COMPETE2020 Programa Operacional
Competitividade e Internacionalização, (FEDER) with the following
Scientific area: Biomedicine, Virology, Cell Biology
Admission requirements: Candidates must hold a BSc degree in the area of
Life Sciences, namely, Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences or similar,
with a minimum average of 15 points and an MSc degree in the same areas with a
minimum average of 18 points. Candidates must be enrolled in (or meet the
criteria to enroll) a doctoral program or in a non-degree course of the
University of Aveiro. Candidates must also have advanced knowledge of English
and possess a scientific and professional curriculum that reveals an adequate
profile for the pursuit of the work to be developed. Preference is given to
candidates with laboratory experience, namely in cell and molecular biology
techniques (PCR and qRT-PCR, western blot, nucleic acid extraction, protein
extraction, immunocytochemistry, etc.), virology (preferably with influenza
virus or human cytomegalovirus), biochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and
animal cell culture. Experience in research with peroxisomes and other
intracellular organelles will also be valued. Candidates must be motivated to
work in an international environment as well as in a possible future
application to obtain the degree of Doctor in Biomedicine.
Only candidates that fulfil the requirements established by the Portuguese
Decree-Law 123/2019, of August 28, and the Statute of Scientific Research
Fellow of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, IP), as
established by the Regulation 950/2019, of December 19, are eligible.
In the case of previous degrees from foreign institutions, the degrees must be

infection mechanisms, common to different viruses of high medical impact and
economic relevance, and the peroxisome-dependent antiviral innate immunity-
The results of this project may contribute to the discovery of new cellular
targets, not only for the development of specific antiviral combat strategies
but also for the potential development of antiviral therapies with a broad
spectrum of action. The work to be carried out by the grantee within the scope
of the project comprises the use of: molecular and cellular biology
techniques; cell culture maintenance techniques; BSL-2 security level viral
infection techniques; fluorescence microscopy techniques; biochemical and
morphological techniques; data processing and analysis; preparation of
reports, publications and other documents in Portuguese and English.
