    WORK PLAN

    The objective of this research part of IN2TRACK3 project is to develop an innovative and smart geomaterial (selfsensing cementitious geocomposites) for continuous monitoring and damage identification and localization. This is an up-scaling of the experimental proof of concept in IN2TRACK2 project. The developed material will be tested in physical models at the laboratory scale and in real smart rail track structures under ballast layer in transition zones.

    More precisely, the research work to be carried out is the following:

  • State-of-art about available methods and technologies to detect, localize and quantify damage in railway substructures constructed from conductive cement geocomposites (selfsensing cementitious geocomposites);
  • Construct physical models in laboratory (beams and slabs) to test those methods and technologies. Validation in a railway accelerated fatigue testing (Graft) facility at Heriot-Watt University, UK (cooperation research);
  • Application in two demonstrators in real Railway lines in Portugal (cooperation work with “Infrastructures of Portugal).
  • HOST INSTITUTION AND SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISION

    The work will be carried out at ISISE (Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering) and at 2C2T (Centre for Textile Science and Technology), School of Engineering of the University of Minho, under the scientific supervision of Professor António Gomes Correia and Professor Raúl Manuel Esteves Sousa Fangueiro.
