    A competition is open for the attribution of 1 research grant in the framework of the project “Coordinated Cetacean Assessment, Monitoring and Management Strategy in the Bay of Biscay and Iberian Coast Sub-region” – CetAMBICion, funded by the European Union under the EMFF Operational Programme 2014-2020, according to the following conditions:

    1. Scientific area:

    Biological Sciences

    2. Admission Requirements:

    Any national, foreign and stateless candidate(s) who hold a degree in the field biological sciences, aquatic sciences, or similar, with a final academic grade of no less than 14 (out of 20), and a Master degree in biological sciences, or similar, obtained in the last year, with a final grade of no less than 16 (out of 20). Upon the signature of the contract, the candidates must hold their Master degree, and be enrolled in a PhD program or in a non- academic degree course integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.

    Candidates must hold a scientific and professional profile adequate to the activities to be performed:

    i. Previous experience working with cetacean species: 1) contact with stranding networks and necropsies; 2) experience in cetacean monitoring with different methodologies; 3) work in supporting the organization and coordination of cetacean monitoring programmes; 4) previous work with the species Phocoena phocoena (stranded animals and monitoring).

    ii. Experience in writing scientific documents (reports, theses, conference presentation) in the field of cetacean ecology and in processing cetacean occurrence datasets.

    iii. Native in Portuguese and experience with English.

    iv. Driver's license, category B.

    Candidates who do not comply with the mandatory requirements will not be considered.

    Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with the cetacean monitoring programmes applied at CIIMAR (land-based monitoring and from large vessels as platforms of opportunity) and with experience working with communication and outreach, namely managing social networks and ocean literacy.

    In the event the doctorate degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, said degree must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16th August until the signature of the contract.

    3. Work Plan:

    The selected candidate will join the CetAMBICion team and will participate in the following activities:

    - Coordination of the communication and outreach of the project at the regional level, in cooperation with the CIIMAR communication office;

    - Support the organization of technical workshops and workshops with stakeholders (fishing sector);

    - Data processing and organization / collation of information relevant for the deliverables predicted within the project (cetacean occurrence, monitoring protocols, bycatch data, legislation and European directives, …);

    - Organization and collation of information on techniques and methods for monitoring and mitigation of cetacean bycatch in the study area;

    - Organization, processing and analysis of collected data;

    - Scientific and report writing, outreach activities on the project topics;

    The selected candidate will also participate in other activities in the scientific field of marine biodiversity and ecosystems, and marine conservation, including: participation in monitoring campaigns (land-based and at-sea), support in the coordination and organization of monitoring campaigns; and work with stakeholders and other activities in the field of environmental education and citizen-science.

    4. Legislation and official rules:

    Law no.40/2004, 18th August (Research Fellowship Holder Statute) in its current version; Regulations for Studentships and Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P. and CIIMAR Grants Regulation.

    5. Work place:

    The work will be carried out at the Laboratory of Coastal Biodiversity (LBC) Group of CIIMAR, with headquarters located in Terminal de Cruzeiros do Porto de Leixões, Av. General Norton de Matos, s/n, 4450-208, Matosinhos, and FCUP, under the scientific supervision of Prof. Isabel Sousa Pinto.

    6. Duration of the grant:

    Duration of 12 months, starting in October 2021, eventually renewable according to the period needed to execute the activities, under the regime of exclusive dedication.

    7. Grant value:

    The monthly maintenance allowance is 1.104,64€/month, in agreement with the monthly maintenance stipend table of the grants directly attributed by FCT, I.P. within the country https: // www. fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en, by bank transfer payment.

    8. Selection methods:

    The candidates will be ranked based on: A) Academic qualification: 50%; B) Relevant experience and qualification to the research grant: 50%; The evaluation process may include an interview with the five top

    candidates. Then, the interview will weight 20% of the final score, and the previous evaluation (A+B) will weight 80% of the final score.

    The jury reserves the right to not assign the grant depending on the

    quality of the applications.

    10. Form of Advertising/notification of results:

    The final results of the evaluation will be published through a list sorting the candidates according to

    their attributed mark, on the CIIMAR website and by e-mail; in case of disagreement, the candidates

    have a 10-working day term in which to contest the decision, if he/she so wishes, as provided for in

    the Código do Procedimento Administrativo in a preliminary hearing setting. The jury reserves the right to not assign the grant depending on the quality of the applications.

    11. Deadline for application and presentation of applications:

    The competition is open from 13th September until 24th September 2021. The applications must be formalized, compulsorily, by sending the following documents:

  • Detailed Curriculum vitae;
  • Copy of the eligibility certificates;
  • Proof of enrollment in a PhD program or in a non-academic degree course integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units;
  • Motivation letter;
