    i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities by PhD students or by Master´s enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, within the project “Exploring glycans as novel players in tumor-adipose tissue transdifferentiation and cancer cachexia”, ref. - EXPL/MED-ONC/1001/2021, financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P/MCTES, PIDDAC.

    Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal

    Scientific Area: Biomedicine, Oncobiology, Glycobiology.

    Project Title: “Exploring glycans as novel players in tumor-adipose tissue transdifferentiation and cancer cachexia”.

    Workplan:

    Cancer cachexia results from skeletal muscle and adipose tissue consumption, which critically affects patients' wellbeing and survival. There are currently no effective therapies for these patients. Therefore, our understanding of the mediators of cancer cachexia needs to be improved in order to provide effective care for these patients. We propose to study the role of glycans in this process. In addition, we aim to demonstrate that STn has the ability to mediate adipose tissue interaction and transdifferentiation either by direct cell-cell contact or systemically by cancer extracellular vesicles, to open new avenues for the development of novel therapeutic approaches to manage cancer cachexia.

    Admission Requirements:

    Mandatory: We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a Master degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedicine, Biotechnology or related fields and being enrolled in a non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, at the time of the start of the project; or in a PhD Program, preferentially in Biomedicine, or related areas, at the time of the start of the project;

    It is also required experience in cell culture, extracellular vesicles, protein analysis, flow cytometry, western blotting and microscopy.

    Preferential: the candidate should demonstrate interest and knowledge in oncobiology and glycobiology, extracellular vesicles isolation and characterization and patient samples handling techniques, very good oral and written skills in English and interest in data analysis.

    Legislation and other applicable regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statute enacted by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th, as amended; FCT Research Grants Regulation, approved by way of Regulation nr. 950/2019, published in the II Series of DR of December 16th, 2019; i3S Research Grants Regulation.

    Place: The research activites will be hosted at i3S, under the scientific coordination of Doctor Daniela Freitas.

    Length time: The duration of the fellowship is 9 months, nonrenewable. The expected starting date is 1st of March 2022, upon availability of the financed funds.

    Monthly maintenance stipend: €1.104,64, according to the values table of FCT, at Portugal (https: // www. fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/TabelaValoresSMMLOE2021.pdf). The payments will be made by bank transference.

Candidates will be ranked taking into account the full evaluation (in a scale from 1 to 100). With the purpose of further clarification regarding the curricular elements presented, the 3 candidates with higher ranking will be selected for an interview. In this case, for the interviewed candidates, the first component of the evaluation will be valued in 70% (detailed Curricula 40% and motivation letter 30%) and the interview will be valued in 30%.

    Evaluation Panel: President – Daniela Freitas, PhD;

    Other members – Prof Fátima Gartner, PhD; Joana Gomes, PhD;

    Substitutes - Prof. Celso Reis, PhD; Catarina Gomes, PhD

    Information and Publicity of Funding Granted: The evaluation results will be published on the i3S website. The candidates will be notified by email.
