    i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities by PhD students or by Master´s enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, within the project “Combined mucosal and systemic immunization to protect against bovine neosporosis”, ref. - PTDC/CVT-CVT/3045/2021, financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P/MCTES, PIDDAC.

    Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.

    Scientific Area: Veterinary Sciences.

    Project Title: “Combined mucosal and systemic immunization to protect against bovine neosporosis.”

    Workplans: The protozoan Neospora caninum is a leading cause of abortion in cattle with an estimated global economic burden exceeding one billion dollars per year. We have previously developed an experimental mucosal vaccine for neosporosis transmitted by the horizontal route that boosts immunity both in the gastrointestinal mucosa and systemically. Building on our previous results, we intend here to reformulate our immunogenic preparation and attain optimal delivery and immunogenicity to effectively protect cattle against vertical transmission of neosporosis. The ensuing plan will be followed to achieve this goal: 1) Production of NcMP and of recombinant immunodominant proteins; 2) production of antigen plus adjuvant-loaded DODAB:MO liposomes; 3) evaluation of immunomodulatory and antigen presenting effect of the prepared liposomes in bovine dendritic cells; 4) evaluation of the immune response elicited in cows immunized with selected antigen-loaded liposomes; 5) assessment of the experimental vaccine efficacy in preventing abortion and congenital transmission in experimentally infected cattle and the associated immune response; 6) transcriptional profiling (RNA-seq) of host immune- related genes, and of infection-associated parasite genes, in the placentomes of immunized and sham-immunized infected pregnant animals.

    Obtaining a neosporosis vaccine that could prevent or reduce abortion and congenital infection will have a major impact on cattle production systems.

    Admission Requirements:

    Mandatory :

  • Being enrolled in a PhD Program, preferentially in Veterinary Medicine, Biological Sciences or related areas, at the time of the start of the project.
  • Or master´s in Veterinary Medicine, Biological Sciences or related areas, and being enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, at the time of the start of the project.
  • The candidate must demonstrate interest and motivation to develop their PhD in the scientific area of the project.
  • Preferential:

    - Proven laboratory experience in immunological techniques and cell and molecular biology, namely in cell culture, ELISA, immunofluorescence or immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, nucleic acid extraction, RT-PCR, Western Blot;

    - Scientific and technological production, including scientific publications and oral and panel communications;

    - Fluency in the English language (spoken and written);

    - Immediate availability to start the scholarship contract.

    Legislation and other applicable regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statute enacted by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th, as amended; FCT Research Grants Regulation, approved by way of Regulation nr. 950/2019, published in the II Series of DR of December 16th, 2019; i3S Research Grants Regulation.

An assessment will be made (on a scale from 1 to 100 values), followed by a ranking of candidates based on the score obtained in the criteria defined above. The three candidates who present the best classifications in the joint evaluation of the curriculum and motivation letter will be interviewed. The joint evaluation of the curriculum and motivation letter will have a weight of 70% and the interview will have a weight of 30% in the final classification.

    Evaluation Pannel: President - Alexandra Correia; members - Manuel Vilanova and Luzia Teixeira.
