  • One Investigation Scholarship in the field of cultural history and artistic studies, within the scope of the projetct Unveiling the Mural Painting Art of Almada Negreiros (1938-1956): Technical, Material and Diagnostic scientific study as a guide for its conservation and fruition) (PTDC/ART- HIS/1370/2020), funded by FCT, I.P. through national funds.

    The aim of the Research Scholarship is to follow the following Project Tasks:

    Documental research on the Almada Negreiros (AN) artistic production.

    Consisting in a survey of the existing primary and secondary documentary sources about the artist. AN was self-taught and therefore understanding his knowledge and experiences in mural painting is of paramount importance. This task includes research in public and private cultural institutions (eg. Gulbenkian documentation center, BN, Lisbon CM, APL archive), family archives, periodicals and digital archive of the Orpheu generation.

    Additionally, the scholarship holder will carry out a survey of interventions for the conservation and restoration of the Almada mural work in the documentation center of the José Figueiredo Laboratory (LJF) and Directorate General for Cultural Heritage (DGPC).

    Documenting in-situ and non invasive analysis of the Murals, including:

  • Visual Inspection and Documentation in the visible range (Vis);
  • Technical photography (TP) in low-angle light photography (conventional raking light and PTMs), ultraviolet reflectance (UVR); ultraviolet-induced visible fluorescence (UVF), near infrared (NIR) photography;
  • Conventional vis-spectrophotometry and colorimetry; Fiber optic reflectance spectroscopy (FORS) and energy dispersive h-X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF).

    Eligibility criteria

    The scholarship is intended for a holder of a Degree in History of Art, Conservation and Restoration, Conservation Sciences or related fields.

    In addition to holding the aforementioned academic degree, the candidate(s) must be enrolled in study cycles leading to the attribution of an academic degree (Masters or Doctorate) or in courses that do not lead to an academic degree, pursuant to articles 3 and 6 of the FCT Research Grants Regulation No. 950/2019 of December 16.

    Selection process

    Application submission:

    The application must be sent, exclusively, by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt, addressed to the Hon. Ms. Maria Gabriela Góis Ribas Martins de Carvalho and sent to the José Figueiredo Laboratory, located at Rua das Janelas Verdes, n.º 37, 1249-018 Lisbon, with the subject, Application Research scholarship DGPC/ PTDC/ART-HIS /1370/2020, including the full name, number and expiration date of the identity card or citizen's card, tax identification number, date of birth, residence and contact address, including email address and telephone number, and must be accompanied , under penalty of exclusion (points 1 to 3) or non-consideration for evaluation purposes (points 4 and 5), of the following documents:

    1. Letter of Motivation, presented for the research project in the competition, with a description of the methodology and a proposal for a timetable, given the work plan proposed and the relevance of the scholarship in the candidate's academic and professional project;

    2. Detailed Curriculum Vitae, dated and signed, mentioning the professional and/or research functions that he performs and those previously performed, with an indication of the respective periods of stay, as well as the professional training held, referring to the completed training actions and related to the work plan;

    3. Legible copy of academic qualification certificates (Licentiate, Masters and Doctorate);

    4. A legible copy of the documents proving the training activities attended, with an indication of the entity that promoted them, the period in which they took place and their respective duration;

    5. Any other document that the candidate considers relevant for the assessment of his/her merit and professional experience, namely letters of recommendation, scientific publications, etc.

    Additional comments

    Selection Methods:

    The selection methods to be applied will be as follows:

    1. Curriculum Assessment and Motivation Letter (AC) (70%);

    2. Interview (E) (30%).

    Only candidates with a rating equal to or greater than 12 points in the Curriculum Assessment selection method will be invited to the Interview selection method.

    All parameters will be valued on a scale from zero to 20 values.

    Form of advertising / notification of results:

    The final results of the evaluation will be publicized, through a list ordered by the final grade obtained by the candidates, posted on the DGPC website, and the successful candidate will be notified through e-mail.

    Skills/Qualifications

    Preferred requirements:

    The candidate to hire and considering their profile should:

    • Have experience in non-invasive technical and analytical studies of works of art;

    • Knowledge of mural painting;

    • Have experience in using and/or interpreting the results of the various analytical techniques mentioned above;

    • Computing from the user's perspective: Windows/Microsoft Office (Word/Excel/Powerpoint and Endnote)

    • Editing programs: Corel or Illustrator/ Adobe Photoshop;

    • Ability to participate with multidisciplinary teams in field campaigns;

    • Have a spirit of initiative and autonomy in performing tasks;

    • Have research capacity/experience in archives and documentation centers;

    • Have the ability to organize data and its interpretation;

    • Possess flexible schedules;

    • Not having vertigo or any other type of psycho-motor disorder that affects your ability to work at heights;

    • Collaborate in extension and dissemination activities for the AN project.
