  • A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for PhD students (BI) or masters enrolled in a non-academic degree course, within the R&D Project Pack2Life – High Performance Packaging, R&D Project in consortium, project Nº33792, promoted by COMPETE 2020 and co-funded by FEDER within Portugal 2020, taking place at the C-MAST ‐ Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Sciences and Technology (www. aerospace.ubi.pt), Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal.

    Scientific Area: Mechanical Engineering.

    Objectives:

    Reports and scientific papers of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) parametric studies of thermal and mass (including phase change materials) behavior for the optimized air flow and heat and mass transfer in fruit storage packaging.

    The expected outcome of the research work requires at least 3 scientific publications (2 in international conference and 1 in peer review international journals) during the grant period.

    Work plan:

    This grant comprises the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) parametric studies concerning thermal and mass behavior (including phase change materials) for the optimized air flow and heat and mass transfer in fruit storage packaging. This study includes the development of experimental tests (laboratory and real test conditions along the product cold chain) for characterizing the storage conditions provided by the packaging. The experimental work includes the instrumentation of the preliminary packaging with several measurement devices/probes. The experimental results also used for the definition of boundary conditions of the CFD models and corresponding validation. The results of the experimental and numerical works will be used to develop web-based computational decision-making support tools. The expected outcome of the research work requires at least 3 scientific publications (2 in international conference and 1 in peer review international journals) during the grant period.

    Work location:

    The work will be developed at the premises of C-MAST‐Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Sciences and Technologies and Department of Electromechanical Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, under the scientific guidance of Professor Pedro Dinis Gaspar.

    Fellowship duration and conditions:

    The scholarship is expected to start in September 2021 and have a duration of 7.3 months (total grant time = 7.3 months = 222 days). .

    The contract requires exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI.

    Benefits

    Benefits:

    A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of 1104,64 € according to the updated values that can be consulted at https: // www. fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.

    The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance.

    The monthly amount shall be rendered payable via bank transfer to an account held by the grantee.

    Eligibility criteria

    Requirements for admission and hiring:

    - To hold a MSc degree in Mechanical, Electromechanical Engineering or similar scope degree and meet the conditions to being enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to the PhD degree (or in an advanced non-degree conferring course);

    - Knowledge in Heat and Mass Transfer, CFD simulation (Ansys Fluent and/or COMSOL), Java, C, C++ programming languages, web development are preferable factors.

    The proof of registration in the PhD/non degree course is required for the fellowship contractualization.

    The BI awarded to masters who are enrolled in courses that do not lead to an academic degree can only be granted for a maximum period of one year.

    The BI awarded to masters who are enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with the execution of the scholarship contract in question, including possible renewals, a cumulative period of two years in this type of research fellowship, followed or interpolated.

    Selection process

    The selection and ranking of the candidates will be carried out in the first phase based on the following parameters and on a scale from 0 to 20: A - Curriculum vitae/Academic evaluation (30%); B - Suitability of the candidates' profile to the project based on the relevant work experience in the tasks described in the work plan (60%); C - Fluency in oral and written English (10%).

    A second evaluation phase will be included for the two candidates who have obtained the highest marks. An interview (which can be done by video- conference) will assess their profile as a researcher, which will take into account aspects such as specific knowledge and proven experience in the field, motivation, availability, commitment, among other aspects. The final classification will be calculated as the average between the classification obtained in the first phase (50% weighting) and the classification obtained in the interview (50% weighting), and expressed in the scale of 0 to 20 points.

    Publication/notification of results:

    The results of the evaluation will be publicized through a list sorted by final grade obtained, posted in a visible and public place of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal. The candidate(s) will be notified of the decision by e-mail.

    Complaint and Appeal Procedures:

    After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.
