  • Job Status: Full-time
  • Hours Per Week: 35
  • Reference Number: MiraAssets BI#2
  • A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for PhD students (BI), within the R&D Project “MIRAASSETS - Sistema de gestão estrutural de ativos industriais”, co-financed by the Portugal 2020 Program (PT 2020), in the framework of the Regional Operational Program of the Center (CENTRO 2020) and the European Union through the Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER), taking place at the taking place at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Covilhã (Portugal) (https:// www. di.ubi.pt), under the following conditions:

    Research Field: Computational Engineering

    Objetives:

This fellowship aims to hire a Ph.D. student to develop research work in two tasks (T2.3 and T2.4) of the MiraASSETS project. Task T2.3 aims to develop neural network models and architectures for SHM (Structural Health Monitoring), with application to industrial metallic structures. These neural networks will be, in principle, convolutional neural networks (CNN) and will predict when an industrial metallic structure needs maintenance. Task T2.4 aims to train and test the algorithms implemented in Task 2.3. Additionally, this task will carry out the laboratory evaluation of the predictive capacity of each of the algorithms in terms of sensitivity and specificity, promoting the necessary adjustments.

    Work plan:

The grantee to be hired will develop his/her research activities in the following tasks:

Task 2.3 - Development of algorithms to detect and support the diagnosis of anomalous situations

Start date: 01/06/2022 Completion date: 30/11/2022

This task aims to develop neural network models and architectures for SHM (Structural Health Monitoring), with application to industrial metallic structures. More specifically, this task will take advantage of convolutional neural networks (CNN) to predict when an industrial metallic structure needs maintenance. The input data will be obtained from sensors previously place in such metallic structures.

Task 2.4 - Training and evaluation of machine learning (ML) models for predictive maintenance of industrial structures

Start date: 01/12/2022 Completion date: 31/05/2023

This task aims to train the algorithms implemented in Task 2.3. Additionally, this task will carry out the laboratory testing and evaluation of the predictive capacity of each of the algorithms in terms of sensitivity and specificity, promoting the necessary adjustments.

Outcomes : As a whole, Tasks 2.3 and 2.4 will lead to the production of the Python code and consolidated prototype of the CNN for SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) of industrial metallic structures. These two tasks will give rise to one technical report at least. It is also expected the publication of the research and development results in some top-ranked scientific journals.

    Work location:

The work will be developed at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, under the scientific supervision of Professor Abel João Padrão Gomes (agomes@di.ubi.pt).

    Fellowship duration and conditions:

The fellowship is scheduled to start predictly in September 2022 up to the end of the project (June 30, 2023).

The fellowship can be renewed, with a favorable opinion from the supervisor, for a total duration of 12 months if the funding entity authorizes the extension of the project's end date.

The activity is in regime of exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI.

    Receipt of applications:
