  • A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for PhD students (BI) or MSc degree holder enrolled in a non-academic degree course, within the R&D Project Aquae Vitae – Água Termal como Fonte de Vida e Saúde (PD20-00003), promoted by Fundação La Caixa and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, taking place at the CICS-UBI: Health Sciences Research Center, University of Beira Interior (https: // www. ubi.pt/entidade/CICS), Covilhã, Portugal, under the following conditions:

    Scientific Area: Pharmaceutical Sciences.

    Objectives:

    Research in Health Sciences, bioactivity of mixtures as cosmetic ingredients. The fellow will be the point of contact between the parts of the project and will be responsible for the technological development of the project and will dedicate himself to the integration of all the tasks described, namely: (1) Conjugation of thermal water with natural-based bioactive compounds and/or agro-industrial residues for cosmetic use; (2) Development of sustainable cosmetic products based on previously selected compounds; (3) In vitro validation in 3D models of the biological effects of the developed products; (4) Validation of the potential and economic and financial viability of the cosmetic products developed; (5) The project results will be published in the form of 2 scientific articles indexed in the ISI - results of the combination of bioactives with thermal waters, 1 scientific article with the proposal of formulations and technological characterization, 1 Master's thesis in Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBI - results from the development of formulations, 1 report characterizing the economic and financial viability and sustainability of the products developed, and 5 presentations at scientific conferences, and the work carried out by the scholarship holder will contribute to the fulfillment of these indicators.

    Work plan:

    The grant comprises the study of the combination of thermal water and bioactive compounds of natural basis and agro-industrial residues with a view to the development of sustainable cosmetic products supported by the circular economy. The work plan includes the evaluation of the in vitro activity of the proposed combinations, namely with regard to antimicrobial and antioxidant evaluation. Based on the most interesting combinations from the point of view of bioactivity, the plan also includes the development of prototypes of cosmetic products, their technological characterization, the evaluation of their stability and the determination of their effectiveness and safety using 3D models. The final phase of the work plan also includes the assessment of the economic and financial viability of the products developed.

    Place of Work:

    The work will be developed at the premises of CICS-UBI - Health Sciences Research Center, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, under the scientific guidance of Professor Ana Palmeira de Oliveira and Professor Rita Manuela Palmeira de Oliveira.

    Fellowship duration and conditions:

    The fellowship is scheduled to start predictly in September 2022, with the duration of 12 months, eventually renewed up to the end of the project (March 31, 2024).

    The activity is in regime of exclusive dedication in accordance with the RBIUBI.

    The fellowship can be renewed, with a favorable opinion from the supervisor, for a total duration of 32 months if the funding entity authorizes the extension of the project's end date.

    Publication/notification of results:

    The final results of the evaluation process will be published in a sorted list, by the final classification obtained, and posted in a visible and public place of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Beira Interior. The candidate(s) will be notified of the decision by e-mail.

    Benefits:

    A monthly maintenance allowance will be granted in accordance with the Annex I of the RBIUBI, with the amount of € 1144.64 according to the updated values that can be consulted at https: // www. fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.

    The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can choose to be covered by the voluntary social insurance. These values will be added to the amount of monthly maintenance allowance.

    The monthly amount shall be rendered payable via bank transfer to an account held by the grantee.

    Eligibility criteria

    Requirements for admission and hiring:

    - Hold a Master degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and laboratorial experience in in vitro methods and product development.

    - To meet the conditions to be enrolled in a cycle of studies leading to a doctorate degree (PhD) degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a MSc degree holder enrolled in a non-academic degree course.

    The proof of registration in a cycle of studies leading to the PhD degree or proof of registration in a non-academic degree course is required for the fellowship contract.

    The BI awarded to masters who are enrolled in courses that do not lead to an academic degree can only be granted for a maximum period of one year.

    The BI awarded to masters who are enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with the execution of the scholarship contract in question, including possible renewals, a cumulative period of two years in this type of research fellowship, followed or interpolated.

    Selection process

    The selection and ranking of the candidates will be carried out in the first phase based on the following parameters and on a scale from 0 to 20: A - Curriculum vitae (30%); B - Suitability of the candidates' profile to the project based on the relevant work experience in the tasks described in the work plan (60%); C - Fluency in oral and written English (10%).

    A second evaluation phase, consisting in an interview, which can be done by video conference, will assess their profile as a researcher, which will take into account aspects such as specific knowledge and proven experience in the field, motivation, availability, commitment, among other aspects. The final classification will be calculated as the average between the classification obtained in the first phase (50% weighting) and the classification obtained in the interview (50% weighting), and expressed in the scale of 0 to 20 points.

    Complaint and Appeal Procedures:

    After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of article 121 and the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.
