  • About This Opportunity

    This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow to engage in research to further their expertise and growing research profile to achieve national recognition in their discipline. At this level it is expected that in incumbent will efficiently manage service and engagement roles and activities.

    The Single Molecule Neuroscience laboratory directed by Prof. Frederic Meunier is seeking a post-doctoral fellow to work on projects supported by the NHMRC and ARC to investigate the spatial and temporal nanoscale clustering of receptors in neurons in the context of health and disease.

    Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D in Neuroscience, Cell Biology or Biophysics. Strong experience in single-molecule imaging and analysis are essential (PALM, STORM, sptPALM, uPAINT, PAINT etc). The applicant should have plenty of experience in primary tissue culture and molecular biology. Knowledge of the generation and application of small antibodies for super- resolution microscopy. Experience with phage display is a plus.

    Key responsibilities include:

    1. Research

  • Conduct research and experiments toward understanding neuronal communication and plasticity in neurons and neurosecretory cells.

  • Publish high quality papers and contribute to the rich academic environment of the laboratory and the institute.

  • Acquire and maintain familiarity with relevant scientific literature and share this expertise with other members of the group.

  • Keep clear and accurate records and ensure effective record keeping and data management.

  • Present results of research at meetings at all levels – laboratory, institutional, national, and international as appropriate.

  • Assist with the mentorship of junior researchers and students within the laboratory.

  • Assist with the development of independent and collaborative funding applications.

  • Contribute to an inclusive, cooperative, and affirmative culture within the group.

  • Undertake relevant training and professional development as appropriate.

  • If it fits with your career goals, you will also be welcome to pursue undergraduate teaching roles.

  • Collection of single-molecule data and data analysis.

  • Writing papers, fellowship applications and grants.

  • Take on a leadership role in independent and/or team research programs including external funding and achieve national recognition and impact in the research area.

  • Conduct research and publish scholarly papers in academic peer-reviewed journals that contribute to the group's strategic research strengths. Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development and conduct of joint research projects, especially projects that are interdisciplinary and contribute to the strategic direction of the Institute.

  • Contribute to the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.

  • Provide effective links with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

  • Contribute to activities that benefit the organisational unit, including participation in decision-making and serving on relevant committees or boards, mentoring and supervision of staff.

  • 2. Teaching

  • Where undergraduate and postgraduate teaching is undertaken achieve teaching quality as indicated by approved surveys and outcomes for students and improve or innovate where appropriate in response to feedback.
  • 3. Supervision and Researcher Development

  • Demonstrate a track record of the effective supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.

  • Demonstrates personal effectiveness in supervision and management and development of researcher capability and skill.

  • Facilitate engagement opportunities for Higher Degree by Research supervisees

  • Effective lead and develop supervisee performance and conduct by providing feedback, coaching, and professional development.

  • Manage staff effectively throughout the employee lifecycle in accordance with University policy and procedures.

  • Working to promptly resolve conflict and grievances when they arise in accordance with University policy and procedures.

  • 4. Citizenship and Service

  • Demonstrate behaviours that align to the UQ values.

  • Shows leadership of self and others through mentoring, collaboration and active participation in priority activities for the unit

  • Provide support to other academic positions and unit operations as needed during other team members absences.

  • Effectively and efficiently manage internal service roles and administrative processes as required, including participation in decision- making and service on relevant committees.

  • Collaborate in service activities external to the immediate organisation unit.

  • Actively pursue and develop external links and partnerships by cultivating relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

  • 5. Other

    About You


  • PhD in the discipline of Neuroscience, Cell Biology or Biophysics.

  • Extensive experience with single molecule super-resolutions approaches which should be reflected as top publications in the field;

  • Demonstrate data analysis skills;

  • An ability to establish effective relationships and collaborations and to represent and promote academic discipline;

  • Demonstrated ability to bring research to publication, excellent organizational and time management skills as well as a high level of written, oral and interpersonal skills;

  • Excellent communication skills;

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively;

  • Excellent attention to detail;

  • Established track record of laboratory safety, occupational health and safety protocols;

  • Familiarity with NHMRC and ARC grant schemes including contributing to successful external grant applications.

  • What We Can Offer

    This is a Full-time, 100% FTE Fixed-term position for 3 years at Academic Level B.

    The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $101,533.66 to $120,570.86 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $118,794.38 to $141,067.91 per annum.
