Both the Centre for Manufacturing and Materials (CMM), and the award-winning
Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME) reside within the
Institute for Clean Growth and Future Mobility (formerly known as the
Institute for Future Transport and Cities) at Coventry University.
The Laser Processing and Joining Research Theme Group, within the Centre for
Manufacturing and Materials, is seeking to recruit a capable Research Fellow
as part of the H1perChain project funded by Innovate UK through APC12 to
develop electrical vehicle battery manufacturing systems.
The H1perChain project, with industrial contribution, amounts to a total of
£11.8M, spread over seven partners with the varied backgrounds necessary to
deliver the project. The partners with Coventry University are: Williams
Advanced Engineering; Unipart; Hyperbat; HSSMI; TWI; and Direc-Tec.
This is an immediate opening for a highly motivated individual with a PhD in
mechanical engineering, materials science, physics or chemistry
(physical/surface). The focus of the successful applicant's work in this
post will be to develop fundamental understanding of the laser joining and
welding of low thickness dissimilar materials for EV battery production in an
Industry 4.0 environment, focussing on welding defects and how they relate to
weld quality. A strong background in laser materials processing with knowledge
of laser joining and materials analysis are essential for this position.
The successful candidate will be part of a vibrant research group with a
variety of lasers based at the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and
Engineering (AME), within the CMM, working on an innovative project to
develop and apply laser welding capabilities for manufacturing next generation
EV battery systems. The position is research focused however, you will have
excellent communication skills and the desire and ability to teach
postgraduate and undergraduate courses.
