    The Opportunity

A postdoctoral position is available for a highly motivated patch-clamp electrophysiologist in the Pain Mechanisms Laboratory in the Department of Physiology. Research in our group is focused on the changes in neuronal signalling that drive chronic pain, particularly at the level of the spinal cord. Our goal is to discover novel strategies to target and reverse increased neuronal signalling in neuropathic pain, in order to discover new and effective analgesics.

The successful candidate will be working on projects investigating synaptic and intrinsic activity within the dorsal horn in spinal cord slice from rodent models of neuropathic pain. In some projects slice electrophysiology will be combined with calcium imaging, optogenetics pharmacological modulation. Strong expertise in slice patch-clamp electrophysiology is required for this position. Experience in rodent behavioural studies, immunohistochemistry and imaging is desirable, but can be learned on the job if needed.

    The candidate's responsibilities:

  • To conduct research under limited supervision both independently and as a member of the team, contributing to the production of research publications and conference presentations
  • Experimental design and operation of advanced laboratory and technical equipment or conduct of advanced research procedures
  • Contribution to teaching undergraduate research students and postgraduate students in the laboratory
  • The candidate's attributes:

  • A doctoral qualification in neuroscience, physiology, pharmacology or a related discipline from a recognised university or equivalent qualifications and research experience in the area
  • Expertise in slice patch-clamp electrophysiology (documented evidence of this skill, for example: publications, thesis chapters or manuscripts in preparation will be requested for shortlisted applications)
  • Demonstrated analytical and manuscript preparation skills
  • Ability to solve complex problems
  • Well-developed planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise multiple tasks and set and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written communication and verbal communication skills with proven ability to produce clear, succinct reports and documents
  • A demonstrated capacity to work in a collegiate manner with other staff in the workplace
  • This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

Your application must address the selection criteria. Please refer to "How to apply for Monash Jobs".
