Institute of Applied Health Research Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322, with potential progression once in post to £42,792 Grade 7 Full Time FTC up to 12 months Closing date 7 July 21

Job Summary

We are seeking to appoint an autonomous and experienced qualitative researcher to undertake research as part of the LAVA trial funded by the NIHR Health Technology Assessment Programme grant number 128991. The LAVA trial aims to establish the clinical and cost effectiveness of laparoscopic surgery compared to open abdominal hysterectomy for women with a benign gynaecological condition undergoing a hysterectomy. Embedded within the pilot trial is a qualitative process evaluation to explore the feasibility, acceptability and appropriateness of the trial and intervention for women and healthcare professionals (HCPs). The results will inform decision-making around progression to a full trial, including study design and processes.

The post-holder will be located in the Institute of Applied Health Research at the University of Birmingham. The post offers an exciting opportunity to work within an internationally leading women's health research teams at the University of Birmingham and Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust.

Main Duties

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below. • Conduct qualitative research as part of a NIHR HTA funded grant number 128991 clinical trial to explore the feasibility, acceptability and appropriateness of the LAVA trial and trial processes for women and healthcare professionals • Identify, recruit and consent research participants • Conduct literature searching and reviewing • Collect, analyse and interpret qualitative interview data using appropriate methods • Contribute to the writing of reports and high quality publications arising from the research • Disseminate research findings via publication, research seminars, and/or conferences as appropriate • Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline • Undertake management/administration arising from research • Contribute to Departmental/Institute research-related activities and research-related administration • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

Person Specification

• First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree (or near to completion) relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications • Experience of undertaking and timely completion of qualitative process evaluations within clinical trials • Self-motivated, pro-active, and able to use initiative where appropriate • Knowledge and understanding of women's health research and issues • Good knowledge of clinical trial research • Ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in written form • Good knowledge of ethical and research governance in health related research • Experience of participant recruitment and taking informed consent • Experience of using qualitative data collection methods and analysis • Evidence of peer-reviewed publications • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary research teams • High level analytical capability • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
