Research Fellow in Social Dimensions of Food Systems Transformation

Are you an ambitious interdisciplinary researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in the social dimensions of food systems, and experience conducting research in Africa? Are you motivated to work as part of a large international team on food systems transformation?

FoSTA-Health is a new 3.5 year programme led by a large consortium of European and Southern African research, policy advocacy and development organisations. It aims to develop ambitious and inclusive visions of, and solutions for food systems transformation for achieving positive One Health outcomes in southern Africa.

FoSTA-Health will develop a programme of research in Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia, focused on evaluating the One Health outcomes associated with different pathways of food system change:

  • Diversification away from maize;
  • Changes in land use and irrigation;
  • Transitions from domestic to export markets for fresh fruits and vegetables;
  • Diet diversification.
  • The research will bring together relevant disciplines inclusive of agronomic, food, health, pathology, climate, social, political and ecological sciences. Particular emphasis will be placed on the social equity and livelihoods implications of food systems change and on the use of participatory and inclusive research approaches and stakeholder and policy engagement.

    Please note that you will be required to attend a number of short (2-4 week) fieldtrips to South Africa, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania totalling between 3-6 months over the duration of the post.
