Fixed-term contract for 3 years, 1.0 FTE.

We are seeking a highly skilled quantitative researcher to develop mathematical models and associated computing software for investigating the impact of climate change on infectious disease outbreak dynamics. This position is funded by a grant from the Wellcome Trust, and the researcher will work with Dr Robin Thompson and Prof. Matt Keeling. They will also collaborate with climate scientists based at Colorado State University (USA), led by Prof. Jim Hurrell. The successful candidate will be a member of the Zeeman Institute for Systems Biology and Infectious Disease Epidemiology Research (SBIDER) and the Department of Mathematics at the University of Warwick. They will also be a member of Dr Thompson's research group,

The ideal candidate would hold a PhD in infectious disease modelling. Since this project will involve using a range of data sources to inform model-based computing tools, experience of the following topics would be an advantage: i) Fitting mathematical models to epidemiological data using methods such as Markov chain Monte Carlo; ii) Development of epidemiological models, including branching process models; iii) Development of computing code and/or software applications based on epidemiological models for use by other researchers.

This position is available for three years, with a negotiable start date in 2023. In addition to conducting the research, the researcher will be responsible for developing the project website and co-organising a project workshop about climate-sensitive infectious disease modelling along with Dr Thompson.

The University of Warwick has considerable experience and expertise in epidemiological modelling, with the SBIDER team serving on public health policy advisory boards. Warwick has a strong international reputation for research on a range of infectious diseases and provides policy advice to WHO and UK government agencies. More generally, SBIDER specialises in bringing sophisticated mathematics to challenges in biological sciences, including modelling infectious diseases in humans and animals. Our research spans from the theoretical to practical policy advice, and from the genome to the population.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure (£31,411). Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure (£32,348).

Job Description


To develop mathematical models of climate-sensitive pathogen transmission and associated computing software, in collaboration with other project members.

To draft scientific publications for appropriate journals that explain the methodology used, results and their implications.

To present the research conducted at national and international conferences.

To co-organise a project workshop and develop a project website.


• To pursue individual and collaborative climate-sensitive infectious disease outbreak modelling research to address policy-relevant questions, consistent with making a substantial research contribution in line with the departmental objective of maintaining its world-class research performance.

• To develop computing software based on the models.

• To publish academic research articles in top journals, and to contribute to the external visibility of the department.

• To participate in relevant professional activities, such as departmental research seminars.

• To co-organise a project workshop and develop a project website.
