Fixed-term contract for a maximum of 54 months (restricted by funding), to start by 1 March 2023, 1.0 FTE. The duration of the contract may have to be reduced up to a maximum 48 months depending on the starting salary of the successful candidate.

This post works between the departments of the School of Life Sciences SLS and the Mathematics departments.

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Zeeman Institute for Systems Biology and Infectious Disease Epidemiology in the School of Life Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Warwick.

The successful candidate will be employed to mathematical models to simulate the spread of livestock and crop diseases in the UK to explore the potential for cross system models to be developed to be used for emerging outbreaks. In particular, the successful candidate will work closely with our colleagues Oregon State University upon the development of a cross system modelling framework for spatially spreading livestock and crop disease systems.

In addition to the research outlined above, the post will include collaboration with policy makers from the UK and the USA, such as Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the US Department of Agriculture. The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Candidates should hold a PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. mathematics, biology or veterinary science). The person appointed to this post will be required to work with and support other members in the research group so is required not only to work independently but be team orientated.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure (£31,411). Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure (£32,348).

Job Description


The postholder will undertake research in the Zeeman Institute for Systems Biology and Infectious Disease Epidemiology, supporting the work of the centre. The PDRA will work closely with the project investigator, Professor Michael Tildesley, as well as collaborators at Oregon State University.

The purpose of this position is to develop models of livestock and drop disease to develop a cross system modelling framework. The PDRA will work closely with policy makers at the Animal and Plant Health Agency and the US Department of Agriculture.



1. To establish a sound research base within the Zeeman Institute, the School of Life Sciences and the Mathematics Institute that will lead to individual and collaborative research of high quality consistent with making a full active research contribution.

2. To publish research outcomes in appropriate journals of international standing and to publish and disseminate the result of research and scholarship in other reputable outlets.

3. To attend and present research findings and papers at academic and professional conferences, and to contribute to the external visibility of the University.

4. To translate knowledge of advances in the subject area into research activity.

5. May contribute to preparing proposals and applications to external bodies, e.g. for funding and contractual purposes, to support a developing research agenda.

6. May present information on research progress and outcomes to bodies supervising research, e.g. steering groups.

7. May contribute to the preparation of papers for steering groups and other bodies.

8. Communicate complex information (orally and in writing) and material of a specialist or highly technical nature.

9. Continually update own knowledge and understanding in field or specialism.

Teaching and learning support

1. Could be expected to contribute to the teaching and learning programmes in the department.

2. Assist in the supervision of student projects and the development of student research skills.

3. May be involved in the assessment of student knowledge and supervision of projects.

Administration and other activities

1. May be required to attend departmental meetings and to participate (where necessary) in other committees and working groups within the department, the faculty and the University.

2. Ensure compliance with health and safety in all aspects of work.

3. Work within budget constraints.
