Description

2022-05321 - Research Engineer (M/F) / Human-Computer Interaction

Contract type : Fixed-term contract

Level of qualifications required : Graduate degree or equivalent

Fonction : Temporary scientific engineer

About the research centre or Inria department

The Inria University of Lille centre, created in 2008, employs 360 people including 305 scientists in 15 research teams. Recognised for its strong involvement in the socio-economic development of the Hauts-De-France region, the Inria University of Lille centre pursues a close relationship with large companies and SMEs. By promoting synergies between researchers and industrialists, Inria participates in the transfer of skills and expertise in digital technologies and provides access to the best European and international research for the benefit of innovation and companies, particularly in the region.

For more than 10 years, the Inria University of Lille centre has been located at the heart of Lille's university and scientific ecosystem, as well as at the heart of Frenchtech, with a technology showroom based on Avenue de Bretagne in Lille, on the EuraTechnologies site of economic excellence dedicated to information and communication technologies (ICT).

Context

The engineer will be part of the LOKI project team (https: // loki.lille.inria.fr/). They will also benefit from the support and experience of the Experimentation and Development Service (SED) of the research center (exchanges, advice, training).

The main activity is in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), in the context of the long-term scientific project of the LOKI project-team which is to "rethink and redesign computer systems for interaction", which implies the specification and the development of an ambitious technological artifact (the Interaction Machine). Initially, the recruited candidate will be responsible for integrating the team's preliminary results (e.g., on the topics of advanced input/output management, interaction adaptability and adaptation, and interaction discoverability) into a coherent framework that will validate these approaches and also serve as a support for the team's future research through a coherent software architecture and development tools/methods. These developments will also rely on the team's expertise in interactive systems engineering.

This work may also benefit to other research teams of the research center, such as RMOD (Software Engineering), and SCOOL or MAGNET (AI and data science); as such, a mutualization of certain work may be considered, particularly in the framework of the humAIn Alliance in Artificial Intelligence.

The contract will be for a period of 2 years. Stéphane Huot (https: // loki.lille.inria.fr/~huot/), leader of the Loki project team, will be the main contact. We offer a stimulating working environment in a dynamic research team with a worldwide reputation in the HCI research community. We strongly encourage applications from candidates of all genders and origins. We strive to provide an inclusive environment for all members of the team.

Assignment

Main assignment in the LOKI team (about 90% of their working time):

  • Design and development of software within development projects mainly in the field of HCI (but also potentially in Artificial Intelligence);
  • Consulting and technological support for experimentation in the field of HMI;
  • Support and guidance for developers and interns in the field of HMI;
  • Collective assignment (about 10 % of their working time): with the goal of mutualizing their savoir-faire, the recruited candidate will be required to participate in collective activities for the development engineers of the center and the institute in the field of HCI (tutorials, seminars, workshops, etc.).
