To expand the team of lab support at the department of Industrial Engineering
& Innovation Sciences we are looking for two engineers. Researchers in the
Humans & Technology (H&T) research theme in this department perform high-
quality multidisciplinary scientific research at the intersection of humans
and technology, and translate fundamental research insights into viable
applications, services, and policies. In the position of research engineer,
you will support scientists and students in performing experiments in the
Humans & Technology (H&T) labs by realizing required experimental setups,
taking care of maintenance, upgrading but certainly also further development
of equipment and software applications, providing documentation and supporting
and instructing researchers on the use of the facilities. Among others, the
H&T labs include the Social Robotics lab, a Virtual Reality lab and a
controlled Lighting lab and large-scale living labs.
Ideally, the research engineers, for instance a lighting research technician
and a technical software engineer complement each other to provide the support
and software development required for these labs.
The lighting research facilities are there to facilitate researchers in
the Intelligent Lighting Institute (ILI) in their investigation of
effects of novel lighting solutions of human functioning. The Lighting Lab
enables such research in small-scale controlled conditions, while in the
MARKTHAL Living Lab and the ATLAS Living Lab experiments are conducted in
a real-life setting. You develop software applications for this research
and are responsible for the maintenance of the lighting research
The Social robotics lab consists of a space with various types of
intelligent robots. The research in the Social robotics lab aims to create
responsible and socially intelligent robots that can be adopted in a wide
variety of human environments.
In the Virtual reality lab people can become fully immersed in virtual worlds.
This allows us to study behavior in the virtual worlds, but also enables us to
precisely track peoples' behavior. You develop VR environments and 3D objects
and write interactive VR applications in Vizard, Unity or Unreal Engine,
program robot actions and are responsible for the maintenance of the relevant
A completed degree in Applied Physics (Technische Natuurkunde),
Electrotechnical Engineering or Technical Software Engineering at HBO-
bachelor level or comparable.
Theoretical knowledge of light quantities or the willingness to master
them. Experience with lighting technology or lighting research is an
Affinity and evident experience with software development. Experience with
.NET (C #), Python, Lua, Unity or Unreal Engine is an advantage.
Knowledge of/experience with DMX and/or DALI lighting systems is an
Communicative and skilled in spoken and written English.
