Infotech Oulu Institute is one of the four strategic focus institutes at the
University of Oulu supporting high-quality research, coordinating
multidisciplinary research activities and doctoral training. Infotech's
science-based expertise meets global challenges determined in the strategy of
the University of Oulu (UO) in the focus area ”Digitalization and smart
society” exploring how digitalization can work for everyone. The research
topics include sensing and ubiquitous wireless sensor systems, wireless
communication, and other novel services and systems. The research targets
future information infrastructures and integrates aspects of technology
adoption by complex human groups, communities, and societies.
We are now looking for
to lead the institute during the coming five-year period 2022-2026. This
senior level position is a full-time position, but we are also willing to
negotiate a part time solution (minimum 50% time allocation) with a
candidate having possibility for a part time work at his/her current research
The Research Director will lead and manage the operations of the institute and
ensure the success of spearhead and emerging projects, promote multi- and
interdisciplinary research nationally and internationally, build strategic
partnerships and support in acquiring funding. The Research Director will
report to the Vice Rector of research at the University of Oulu.
We expect you to be an inspirational science leader capable of creating and
implementing a vision on further developing Infotech, its research and
partnerships. You have the ability to work together with the other three Focus
Institutes but also with our multidisciplinary units and faculties in
activities relating to all the University´s focus areas. We also expect you to
have good connections to the national and European research institutes and
science communities relevant to the focus areas. Furthermore, you have
demonstrated your skills in forming and developing long term strategic
partnerships. It is also necessary that you understand national and European
funding possibilities and are interested in seeking new funding opportunities
and winning research consortiums together with the research groups.
To be selected for the position, you are required to hold a Doctoral degree in
a field relevant to the focus area “Digitalization and smart society, and to
have a proven track record and merits in research. You must also have
experience in successfully leading research projects, and the ability to
communicate fluently in English. Finnish skills are considered an advantage.

Salary and key terms
The position is for five years, beginning in January 1, 2022 or as agreed. The
salary is in accordance with the Finnish universities salary system for
teaching and research personnel level 7-9. In addition, a salary component
based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-
specific component). A trial period of six months will be applied.
