As a member of the University Research Computing team, the Research Computing Support Specialist is responsible for assisting faculty with research performed on their local computers and workstations, specifically computers which exist outside of the High-performance Computing/Research Computing data center. These systems consist of primarily Linux-based group owned servers and workstations.

Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Assisting faculty research groups with research software installation, configuration and utilization on group owned servers and workstations.
  • Troubleshooting research software problems on servers and workstations.
  • Instructing faculty research groups with using group-owned servers and workstation securely and effectively within the W&M network.
  • Assisting and/or facilitating backup of research computing data stored on faculty servers and workstations.
  • Assisting research groups in using their servers and workstations in concert with local or off-site high-performance computing resources.
  • Offering instruction and consulting for set-up and administration of group servers and workstations.
  • Working with the Research Computing group to develop best practices for the above tasks.
  • Documenting procedures involved in the above tasks.
  • Required Qualifications

    EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and or experience.

    COMPETENCIES:

  • Advanced knowledge of Linux/Unix system administration principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated skills in setup and administration of Linux based servers and workstations.
  • Sound problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
  • Ability to work one-on-one with research faculty, staff, and students to resolve research challenges.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to document and write procedures of assigned tasks.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a complex, rapidly changing environment.
  • EXPERIENCE: Hands on experience and or expertise in deploying, administering, and maintaining Linux-based operating systems and research software on servers and workstations.

    Preferred Qualifications

    EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Math or a directly related field is highly preferred.

    COMPETENCIES:

  • Linux related scripting skills (tcsh, bash, etc.) and some programming experience (C, C++, Python, etc.).
  • Experience in software installation on Linux servers and workstations from both packages and source code.
  • Ability using and installing software in Windows and Mac OS environments.
  • Working knowledge of computer security principles and practices.
  • Understanding of research methodologies.
  • EXPERIENCE: Administration and software installation/maintenance of Linux-based servers and workstations. Involvement in conducting or assisting in academic research activities.

  • This position is subject to additional hours beyond the typical work day/week to include weekends and holidays.
  • This position may require occasional overnight travel.
  • The duties of this position may be performed remotely. With the supervisor's approval, the incumbent may have the option to work remotely on a part-time basis.
