The Office of Information Technology (OIT) delivers central information technology services for NC State University and a number of partner institutions. The Advanced Computing team within OIT Shared Services provides services critical to the success of NC State's research enterprise. Current services include research storage, high performance computing, and research facilitation (in conjunction with NC State University Libraries). This position will be part of the research facilitation service with initial focus on information technology requirements related to the N.C. Plant Sciences Institute (PSI).

The N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative (PSI) supports wide-ranging research, education and training, and extension by creating an environment and culture in which such learning activities can thrive through the convergence of interdisciplinary collaborations. Headquartered in the new NC State University Plant Sciences Building (opening early 2022), this new research and application ecosystem combines world-class assets from across a wide spectrum of disciplines including plant sciences, engineering, economics, modeling, and data analytics.

Essential Job Duties

This Research Computing Architect and Solutions Developer position will work closely with interdisciplinary research teams to design IT systems to support data acquisition, management, and analysis requirements, and support complex interdisciplinary projects within and across university academies, centers, initiatives, and institutes. In collaboration with project Principal Investigators (PIs) and OIT's Assistant Vice Chancellors for Communications Technologies and Shared Services (who serve as the virtual Chief Technology Officer for OIT), this position provides design options for personnel and computing architectures needed to support large interdisciplinary research project objectives.

The position will be responsible for the design and implementation of research environments (including: databases; compute and storage services; security and access controls; and account management processes) in coordination and collaboration with various IT service teams who are responsible for delivery of relevant services. The individual in this position is expected to maintain knowledge of new computing trends and technology, specifically including “as a service” offerings.

Other Responsibilities

This position may provide limited operational support during the early stage of projects. The position will supervise a number of permanent, temporary, or contracted personnel providing research IT support services and/or operational support of research environments.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

Master's degree and at least two years' of relevant experience; or Bachelor's degree with at least three years' of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills
  • Experience with IT system design including cloud computing service (eg AWS, Azure, or GCP) design
  • Extensive experience with one or more scripting languages (eg Perl or Python)
  • Passion for learning and problem solving
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Six or more years experience with IT system design
  • Three or more years experience with cloud computing and services system design
  • Cloud computing certification(s)
  • Experience with design and/or management of hybrid on-premise/cloud computing services
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the research process, data lifecycle, and data workflows
  • Two or more years experience supervising IT, engineering, or research professionals
  • Required License(s) or Certification(s)
