  • Role Description


    This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing and friendly research group in the International Centre for Mental Health Social Research in the Department of Social Policy and Social Work. We are looking for a skilled and versatile Research Associate to join a team on a study funded by the NIHR School for Social Care Research, which aims to develop and test a new standard of the Triangle of Care. This will aim to ensure unpaid carers receive appropriate support when the person they provide care for is on leave from hospital during compulsory detentions under the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA).


    You will undertake multiple research tasks in the course of this study under the supervision of senior colleagues. You will support the recruitment of carers to participate in the study, undertake structured telephone interviews with carers, analyse data and contribute to the writing of papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals.

    Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

    You should have a PhD in a relevant social science or health science subject or equivalent experience. You will have knowledge of mental health social care to engage in high quality research, a range of research techniques and methodologies, UK mental health services and needs of unpaid carers, and the processes involved in developing and evaluating social interventions. You will have experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research, conducting research in mental health or social care services and writing up research work for publication. You will have the ability to work with agility and flexibility with team members, research participants and other stakeholders and collaboratively with service users, carers and practitioners. You will also have the ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals for own and joint research, with the assistance of a mentor if required, the ability to plan and prioritise own work in order to meet deadlines, including using initiative to plan research programmes. You will have highly developed communication skills, attention to detail and commitment to high quality. You will be able to travel throughout England as required by the project

    Condition of Employment

    This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Consequently, all applicants will be asked to declare both unspent and spent convictions on their application form.
