General Statement

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics (DAEE) at Montana State University is seeking to appoint one full-time research associate to support multiple empirical research projects in economics. The research associate will work closely with Professors Carly Urban, Justin Gallagher, and Nick Hagerty and become involved in all stages of research. Research projects will be in the following areas:

  • Career and technical education and personal financial education in high schools. (Urban)
  • Environmental risk and public finance – studying the government's role in communicating and mitigating risk, the decisions individuals make when faced with environmental risk, and the impact of environmental risk on victims who are exposed to an adverse event. (Gallagher)
  • Natural resource and agricultural economics – studying the impacts of climate change, water scarcity, groundwater regulation, and water pollution to agriculture and land use, and how producers adapt to these changes. (Hagerty)
  • The position will be based in Bozeman, Montana, though remote work can be negotiated. If in residence, the research associate will have the opportunity to attend seminars, meet with speakers, and network with other faculty in the department. Previous Research Associates in the DAEE have been successful in securing admissions in prestigious Economics PhD programs (e.g., the University of Chicago Harris School, University of Colorado Boulder), as well as jobs in data science.

    The position runs for one year, but reappointment for a second year may be possible, depending on funding.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Clean, process, and analyze data using Stata and R.
  • Download and prepare data using R, Python, and ArcGIS.
  • Create visual displays of data in the form of figures, tables, and maps.
  • Find and synthesize information on the details of public policies and institutions.
  • Read and summarize published economics papers.
  • Assist in training and managing part-time undergraduate research assistants.
  • Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics or another relevant subject area (such as applied math, statistics, computer science, or public policy).
  • Demonstrated experience using Stata to clean and analyze data.
  • Demonstrated experience programming in a language such as R, Python, or Java.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in either Stata or R.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Master's degree in Economics or another relevant subject area.
  • 1-2 years of experience working with data.
  • Advanced proficiency in Stata and/or R.
  • Experience with all listed software: Stata, R, Python, and ArcGIS.
  • Interest in gaining skills with the goal of pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics or a related field.
  • The Successful Candidate Will

  • Excellent quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work and problem-solve independently while balancing multiple tasks.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, in order to clearly articulate economic arguments and statistical results.
