About the Department
The National Science Foundation Center for Integrated Pest Management (NSF
CIPM) was established in 1991 to serve a lead role in technology development,
program implementation, training, and public awareness for IPM at the state,
regional, and national level. CIPM was established in 1991 to serve a lead
role in technology development, program implementation, training, and public
awareness for IPM.
At present, CIPM develops new strategies, analytics and decision support
systems to advance IPM and plant biosecurity. We serve and partner with
government, industry, and university stakeholders locally, nationally, and
internationally. We assist USDA APHIS PPQ to stop pests at the borders.
A major pathway for the introduction of exotic invasive pests is through
international trade of agricultural commodities and planting materials.
Through multiple projects with USDA APHIS PPQ, CIPM assists the NPPO to stop
pests at borders to safeguard a country's agriculture and natural resources
while facilitating international trade. The Center also develops regional and
national priorities through workshops and stakeholder meetings, and has
developed large databases and decision support systems for USDA and other
Essential Job Duties
This Research Associate position requires the selected candidate to acquire,
analyze and report data on hosts of multiple fruit fly species (and sometimes
other pests) of agricultural importance. Duties include, but are not limited
Data acquisition; the incumbent will collect relevant literature and
communicate with subject matter experts and regulators.
Data analysis; the incumbent will collaborate with stakeholders,
understand applicable standards, review and analyze the data available to
identify and classify fruit fly hosts accordingly.
Data reporting; the incumbent will write highly technical pest host
reports and communicate and present the information to the stakeholders.
Incumbent will work closely with stakeholders, members in a team, other
teams, and the project lead to complete the objectives.
Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Education and Experience
Master's degree in biological, ecological, or environmental science, or
Two or more years of experience acquiring, analyzing, summarizing, and
reporting data on non-native pests such as arthropods, plant pathogens, or

Ability to work independently and in a team as required by the project
lead and stakeholders.
Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate with stakeholders,
application users, and the team timely and effectively.
Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
Ability to work efficiently in a Windows environment and use common
applications like word and excel.
Ability to use a reference manager such as Endnote.
Three or more years of work experience in the following areas:
Fruit flies and plant hosts of fruit flies.
Experience writing USDA APHIS technical reports.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
