The Technical University of Munich (TUM) and its Research Center for Combined Smart Energy Systems (CoSES) in close collaboration with the Chair for Energy Economy and Application Technology (EWK) offer a Research Associate Position (PhD Position) in the field of Bidirectional District Heating and Cooling Networks.

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) and its Research Center for Combined Smart Energy Systems (CoSES) in close collaboration with the Chair for Energy Economy and Application Technology (EWK) offer a Research Associate Position (PhD Position) in the field of Bidirectional District Heating and Cooling Networks. The position is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) through the Research Projekt OSkit (Optimierte Sektorkopplung in Quartieren durch intelligente thermische Prosumernetze, eng. optimized sector coupling in districts using smart thermal prosumer networks).

The OSkit project aims to maximize the efficiency of the energy system and to reduce CO2 emissions by the integration of district heating and cooling (DHC) systems with the electric system. A key aspect of the project are investigations on the technical design and implementation of flexible DHC systems with spatially distributed prosumers that can bidirectionally exchange energy. The CoSES laboratory emulates a neighborhood of five houses that are equipped with different technologies (such as CHP systems and heat pumps) and connected by an electric microgrid and a local thermal network. The CoSES research group runs this environment and conducts research on modeling, control, and operation of multi-energy systems. Within the OSkit project, CoSES collaborates closely with the chair EWK, which is specialized in the design of thermal energy systems and energy market operations.

The new colleague will contribute to the successful completion of the OSkit project. Further, the new colleague will be part of the CoSES research group and as such contribute to its scientific development, as well as support the operation, maintenance, and expansion of the laboratory environment. The possibilities and support for a successful PhD will be given. Potential topics for a PhD could be in the field of local heat markets, analysis and planning of bidirectional heat networks or innovative cooling systems.

Tasks:
  • Study the technical implementation and optimal operation of innovative DHC systems and investigate the interaction of flexible thermal networks with the power grid.
  • Create models and run simulations on case studies.
  • Design, prepare, conduct, and evaluate experiments in the CoSES laboratory environment.
  • Work hands-on in the CoSES laboratory: adapt hardware modules, develop real-time algorithms and implement them.
  • Contribute to the OSkit project deliverables, including project administration tasks.
  • Publish research results in high quality international journals and conferences.
  • Your Qualifications:
  • Master-degree in mechanical / electrical engineering, physics or equivalent with excellent grade from a reputed university.
  • General interest in the above mentioned tasks and in the field of district heating and cooling systems.
  • Strong technical background in energy systems and thermal engineering.
  • Fun at working hands-on in a laboratory with thermal systems.
  • Experience and skills in some of the following areas:
  • Background in laboratory control, preferable previous experience with LabVIEW.
  • Experience in modelling and simulation of energy systems.
  • Programming affinity and skills (Python, C++, Java…).
  • Excellent English language skills (written and spoken), German language skills are preferable.
