The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. Your responsibilities include:

As part of the joint project WISP (Wind energy plant inspection), the division "Thermographic Methods" at BAM is working with partners from industry and research to develop a multi-sensory and drone-compatible inspection method for the maintenance of wind turbine rotor blades. The aim is to make the inspection of rotor blades more efficient, safer, and cheaper by fusing 3D surface data, visual images, and thermographic data measured in the field.

The focus of the work at BAM is on the recording, processing, and interpretation of the thermographic data. In addition, the three data formats (visual, IR, and 3D data) are to be brought together and presented to an inspection team as a single data set. In the three-year project, the measurement system will be developed and tested on operational wind turbines together with the industry. BAM's tasks can be outlined as follows:

  • Image and data processing of thermographic images to optimise thermal and spatial resolution under real conditions (vibration of the drone, low thermal contrasts, etc.).
  • Fusion of the measured 3D surface data, visual imaging, and thermographic data to characterise typical damage to rotor blades of wind turbines.
  • Planning, execution, and evaluation of laboratory and field tests on suitable test specimens and wind turbines.
  • Presentation and publication of research results at conferences and in journals as well as technology transfer.
  • Supervision of young academics (student assistants, bachelor's and master's theses, possibly doctorates).
  • Your qualifications:
  • Completed scientific studies (Diploma/Master) in the field of physics, engineering, physical technology, applied computer science or similar.
  • Extensive experience in one (or more) of the above-mentioned thematic focus points: data processing, physical measurement technology, imaging measurement methods, non-destructive testing.
  • Very good knowledge of digital signal and data processing.
  • Experience in planning and conducting scientific experiments.
  • Very good knowledge of Python or Matlab.
  • Very good knowledge of German and English, both written and spoken.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel to project partners, conferences, and nationwide trade fairs.
  • Own publications as first author in scientific journals.
  • Goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment, and ability to think conceptually, strategically and innovatively.
