Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology and Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Bath, one of the UK's leading universities.

As a part of a large interdisciplinary team you will develop a novel point-of- care detection technology for the Class B drugs, synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs; more commonly Spice). These drugs are endemic in the homeless community and the prison system. The detection technology will decrease the flow of drugs and support vulnerable users as part of a harm reduction strategy. The technology is built on a fluorescence spectral fingerprinting approach developed in our labs, DOI: 10.1039/c9ay00722a (https: // www. bath.ac.uk/announcements/world-first-on-the-spot-test-for- synthetic-drug-spice-developed-at-university-of-bath/).

The project is a true collaborative effort as part of a large (£1.3m) EPSRC grant, involving an interdisciplinary team of researchers from biochemistry, pharmacology, community pharmacy, physics, analytical chemistry, psychology and computer science. Your role will be to build a library of SCRA spectral fingerprints, combined with orthogonal analytical techniques and to interface with other researchers in the team to deliver the point-of-care technology. You will collaborate with police forces, charities, and drug testing facilities.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in an analytical science (chemistry, biochemistry or similar) and be able to interact effectively with scientists from other disciplines as well as external stakeholders. Full training will be provided in all techniques used.

Applicants may direct queries to either Professor Steven Husbands (s.m.husbands@bath.ac.uk) or Dr Christopher Pudney (c.r.pudney@bath.ac.uk).
