We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the group of Dr James Hewitson based in the Department of Biology at the University of York (https: // www. hewitson/). Research in the Hewitson lab focuses on understanding how helminth parasites modify our immune system leading to chronic infection, as well as immune responses to unrelated challenges such as vaccines.

We have recently found chronic schistosome infection modifies bone marrow haematopoiesis and these changes persist after parasite clearance. We now want to determine the drivers and consequences of this, both in terms of anti- parasite immunity and to vaccines. To do this, we will make extensive use of in vivo infection models and human studies. The project benefits from collaborations with experts in haematopoiesis (David Kent, York, UK), human schistosomiasis (Alison Elliott, MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, Uganda) and vaccine responses (NIBSC, UK). This is a full-time post, funded by the UK Medical Research Council on a fixed term basis for 3 years. This is a grade 6 post, with a salary of £33,309 a year.

The post-holder will drive the project working closely with other lab members and assisting in the identification and development of new areas of research and funding proposals. The postholder will be expected to write up research results for dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and will be encouraged to participate in public engagement and science outreach activities. Opportunities for mentorship and additional collaborations will be available and encouraged.

    Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed
  • The successful candidates will have a PhD in a biomedical sciences discipline with a focus of mouse/human stem cell biology or parasite immunology
  • Knowledge in a range of research techniques and methodologies including mouse models and cell and molecular immunology techniques (flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, transcriptomic analysis) to engage in high quality research
  • Strong understanding of current concepts in immunology and/or haematology
  • The successful candidate must have experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research, writing up research work for publication and a willingness to contribute to the process of securing future research funding.
  • Interview date: to be confirmed

For informal enquiries: Please contact Dr. James Hewitson (
