Title Research Associate in Asian Religious TraditionsSchool Harvard Divinity School Department/Area Center for the Study of World Religions Position Description
The Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard Divinity School invites applications for a one-year paid research associate position as part of the Transcendence and Transformation (T&T) Database. The candidate will work under the supervision of the Director of the Center, Professor Charles Stang, and in close collaboration with the lead Research Associate for the T&T Database.
The appointment will begin on October 1, 2023 and end on September 30, 2024. There is potential for a renewed appointment pending progress and funding.
Candidates will pursue a research project in Asian Religious Traditions that aligns with the Center's “Transcendence and Transformation” Initiative. We are especially interested in scholars with an expertise in Asian Tantra, and who bring a history of religions or philosophical approach to their research. The primary tradition and research focus is open. Preference will be given to those candidates who are conversant with traditions beyond their own primary specialization.
The candidate will also work closely with the Research Associate for the T&T Database. The database will offer a comprehensive online encyclopedia of mysticism and assemble an archive of primary source experience reports from across time and place. The candidate will help compile a list of potential subjects in Asian religious traditions, solicit and review encyclopedia entries from scholars in the field, and participate in the development of the conceptual structure and design of the T&T Database and website. Preference will be given to candidates with a previous experience in digital humanities, strong publication and editing record, and with demonstrated skills in digital research and visualization techniques within their research field.
The position will be based at the CSWR. Candidates are expected to reside in the Massachusetts or New England-area and in commuting distance from the CSWR for the duration of their appointment.
Basic Qualifications
Applicants should demonstrate the following qualifications:
(1) Completed advanced degree in a relevant field (PhD)
(2) A research project that fits within the initiative
(3) Evidence of publications relevant to that research project
(4) Evidence of an ability to work independently and collaboratively
Additional Qualifications
Experience and/or training in the digital humanities.
Extensive editing experience.
Demonstrated skills in digital research and visualization techniques within their research field.
