Full Time/Part Time Full Time Position Overview

Performs research activities and analysis; implements, evaluates and recommends adjustments to research procedures. Responsible for synthesizing and independently preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision with a significant degree of creativity and latitude. May coordinate research operations and the daily activities of junior research personnel.

• Participating in planning and/or designing of major scientific projects, studies, or applications • Planning and conducting research and analysis of scientific data • Preparing graphic and narrative reports • Interpreting test results and comparing with determined standards and limits • Performing site inspections and field oversight if field work is required • Planning, designing, developing, monitoring and/or evaluating a distinct portion of a scientific project, study or application • Researching, designing, implementing, standardizing, and evaluating new procedures • Maintaining detailed records of results and prepares written reports acceptable to the Principal Investigator and funding agencies • Other duties as assigned

Position is located in the lab Biogeochemistry Core at UI and is affiliated with SWS. Reports to the Biogeochemistry Core Facility Leader on behalf of the user group which includes representatives of other departments in CALS, CoE, and CoS.

Unit Overview

The Department of Soil and Water Systems offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Soil Science. Other units represented within the user group offer graduate and undergraduate instruction in several biological and environmental areas of study.

Position Responsibilities

Key Accountability Provide Research and Analytical Support by:

Job Duties

Operating and maintaining several high-end analytical instruments for chemical analysis of biological and environmental samples.

Operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining analytical instruments including TOF LC Mass Spectrometer and Direct Analysis Real Time Mass Spectrometer, GC Mass Spectrometry, Isotope Ratio Mass spectrometer, Isotope ratio cavity ring down spectroscopy, and flow injection analyzer. Preparing standard solutions for instrument calibration, operation, and analyses.

Other research and analytical duties as assigned.

Key Accountability Provide continuity of day-to-day laboratory management by:

Job Duties

Ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies and consumables from PI budgets.

Assisting in general management of the laboratory including organization, cleaning, and disposal of waste.

Maintaining laboratory compliance with the University's health and safety policies.

Maintaining requisite chemical inventories.

Coordinating use of core instruments by the university-wide user group.

Training users or conducting analyses on a per sample fee basis, depending on specific project.

Maintaining written lab protocols, assisting with preparing data for grants and publications.

Collecting and organizing laboratory data and uploading data to repositories as required.

Preparing reports for instrument users, funding agencies, and others.

Key Accountability Provide project support by:

Job Duties

Developing user price structure with Biogeochemistry Core Facility affiliated faculty.

Maintaining professional and technical knowledge related to the research projects and UI systems.

Maintaining effective working relationships by interacting with other members of the research teams of the user group.

Performing other duties as assigned within the scope of this position.

Position Qualifications

Required Experience

Two years of research experience beyond receipt of master's degree related to the domain of this position.

Required Education

Master's degree in analytical chemistry or related field.

Required Licensures, Certifications or other Additional Preferred

Ph.D. in analytical chemistry or related field.

Experience with specific instruments in the Core, including TOF LC/MS, DART, GC/MS, IRMS.

Two years of experience working in a research laboratory with demonstrated understanding of safe laboratory working practices.

Experience working with and analyzing biological and/or soil samples.

Self-motivated, enthusiastic, and willing to learn new skills related to the analytical requirements of the user group.

Familiarity and experience operating and maintaining analytical instruments.

Experience trouble-shooting and repairing such instruments or working with company representatives to facilitate maintenance and repairs.

Following pre-established analytical procedures or protocols.

Organizing and analyzing scientific data.

Maintaining compliance with laboratory safety regulations.

Maintaining complete and accurate records.

Communicating effectively with users and clients.

Working in a team environment.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
