Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a project entitled “A scoping review of sentiment analysis in digital spaces”. The project is led by Dr Brit Davidson and Dr Joanne Hinds in the Information, Decisions, and Operations Division in the School of Management.

In recent years, research has demonstrated the possibility of analysing individuals' sentiments from a diverse range of sources including Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and Instagram. While this research continues to grow, there is a lack of awareness regarding the quality of these methods and how well various tools perform, (especially when there are a variety of tools available, e.g., LIWC, spaCy - textblob, VADER).

This project will involve performing a scoping review of existing research on sentiment analysis that seeks to explore what approaches are currently used and how effective they are. The review will pay particular attention to a) whether psychological theories are used to inform research, b) the types of features used to infer individuals' sentiments, c) the methodological approaches and tools used, d) analytical approaches, and e) ethical considerations of the research.

The project will adopt an interdisciplinary perspective that considers how psychological theories relating to language and emotion can be integrated with computational techniques such as machine learning and data analytics. The scoping review will seek to gain a sense of the current state-of-the art in academic research and will inform the development and planning of future studies.

Applicants should hold, or be nearing completion of a PhD in Psychology, Computer Science, Data Science or related discipline.

This is a full-time, fixed-term post with an initial end date of 31st May 2023. There will be a possibility for extension subject to further funding. It will also be possible to work remotely for the duration of the project. For further information, please contact Dr Joanne Hinds: or Dr Brit Davidson: however please ensure that you submit your application through the University website.
