Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary

Research Associate in the laboratory of Professor Kevin Frankowski, charged with designing, executing, and troubleshooting synthetic schemes to often complex bioactive molecules. Formulates research methods, provides suggestions and recommendations for improving quality of research schemes; identifies potential issues or problems and provides recommended solutions. This position requires a wide breadth of synthetic organic experience and the successful candidate will be able to work with independently and help provide guidance to junior laboratory members. Research is conducted within the highly collaborative environment of the UNC Center for Integrative Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery. https:// frankowskilab.web.unc.edu/

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Required: Extensive knowledge of organic reactions and ability to apply this knowledge in a discussion scenario. Ability to independently design and execute experiments. Preferred qualifications and experience requirements: PhD in organic or medicinal chemistry Postdoctoral experience (= or >2 years) with a heavy emphasis on multistep organic syntheses. Strong organic synthesis skills, as evidenced by senior author publications. Experience with a wide range of purification techniques (e.g. flash chromatography, HPLC, distillation, etc.) Familiarity with inert atmosphere techniques and handling of air- and water- sensitive reagents. Evidence of collaborative research experience; experience in the construction of heterocyclic molecules, designing biologically active molecules, and synthetic organic electrochemistry. Expertise in NMR acquisition and spectral analysis. Experience with parallel synthesis, analog design, structure-activity relationship studies, and electronic notebook use preferred.
