Position Summary

Global Water Futures (GWF) is a multi-institutional research program that is funded in part by a $77.8-million grant from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). The overarching goal of the program is to deliver risk management solutions - informed by leading-edge water science and supported by innovative decision-making tools - to manage water futures in Canada and other cold regions where global warming is changing landscapes, ecosystems, and the water environment. As a core GWF partner, Laurier researchers lead several multi-year research projects situated throughout the Northwest Territories; the institution employs several Research Associates to support the research goals and commitments.

The Research Associate will be part of a highly productive team of university researchers focused on the biomonitoring of ecosystem health in the Northwest Territories and involved in investigations of the responses of diverse biota to environmental changes and resource development. In addition, the incumbent will operate and maintain equipment, and provide guidance and oversight of student activities. As well, providing assistance with data analysis and interpretation are integral components of the position.

The position can be based at Laurier's Yellowknife office. The incumbent will assist in the co-ordination of, and will participate directly in, field-level assessments at various Northern locations and will participate in laboratory analyses where appropriate. This position will be required to travel and participate in field work that is expected to occur a few times per year. This may include several weeks of time in remote locations each travel period.

Accountabilities

Fieldwork:

  • Maintains, operates, or installs field instrumentation and conducts field work for sample collections of fish, invertebrates, or abiotic samples for water and sediment quality analyses;

  • Trains and supervises undergraduate and graduate students, and partnership members as required, in field collection techniques in summer and winter conditions;

  • Works in field conditions with collaborating partners, including community members and partnering institutions;

  • Liaises with other academic, government and Indigenous community members as appropriate and under the guidance of the Principal Investigators;

  • Maintains high degree of consideration for self and team safety in extreme field environments.

  • Laboratory Work:

  • Trains and supervises undergraduate and graduate students in relevant laboratory techniques;

  • Liaises with technical support personnel on and off campus as required;

  • Organizes and conducts laboratory analyses in consultation with the Principal Investigators and partners; participates in problem-solving as required.

  • Data Analysis:

  • Assists in data analysis and interpretation;

  • Organizes, structures, and summarizes collected data, in the form of spreadsheets, databases, and reports using appropriate software;

  • Works closely with other data managers in the GWF project to ensure data access, appropriate platforms for data management, etc.

  • Efficient use of Excel and Word and uses statistical and related software as appropriate.

  • Administrative:

  • Helps in shaping and designing project goals and long term objectives and actions;

  • Strong interpersonal skills for interactions with community members and partner organizations;

  • Assistsin preparing annual reports, presentations, manuscripts for peer review, proposals and budgets relating to project;

  • Collaborates with other technicians, principal investigators, etc., on various aspects of Global Water Futures as well as with other intersecting laboratories at Laurier and partner organizations.

  • Qualifications
  • Minimum MSc in biological sciences, preferably with extensive research on fish and/or invertebrates and ecotoxicology-related fields of study;

  • At least two (2) years' experience working in a comparable research environment with knowledge of aquatic ecosystem science and environmental toxicology;

  • Work/educational experience and understanding of multi-disciplinary projects in animal biology;

  • Strong leadership skills and independence;

  • Proven ability to work in a team environment withPrincipal Investigators, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as other scientists, partner organizations and community members;

  • Ability to positively interact and work with members of communities and partner organizations;

  • Excellent analytical and computer skills;

  • Experience and confidence in field-based work with preference for remote locations and/or northern environments;

  • Interest in and ability to work and live in remote areas in the north for periods of time (weeks);

  • Experience working in/with remote northern communities an asset;

  • Lived experience as an Indigenous persons (First Nations, Metis, Inuit and/or Metis) and hold connection to Indigenous communities, employ Indigenous research and teaching methodologies, and/or have notable scholarly outputs recognized by Indigenous scholars an asset;

  • Demonstrated experience in significant data management an asset;

  • Experience in writing lab reports and research papers, and making presentations;

  • A valid G driver's license is required and willingness to travel and work in northern locations;

  • Willingness and ability to operate snowmobiles and/or small boats in field environments.

  • Hours of work: Regular hours of work are Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm. However, irregular hours of work are expected for any necessary travel for field work or meetings at northern locations and the hours of work per day will be dictated by the field work. It is expected that this irregular schedule would occur for a few consecutive days possibly 3-4 times per year.

    Compensation

    $65,000 - $75,000 per year

    All Laurier employees and students are required to comply with the University's Covid-19 mandatory vaccination policy.
