Research Assistant

Are you an early career researcher looking for your first challenge? Do you have a background in smart textile materials and wearable electronics? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK's leading research-intensive Universities?

Bats are key to the functioning of a multitude of ecosystems, yet are highly sensitive to anthropogenic stressors and environmental change. Due to their cryptic nature and low body mass, monitoring individuals poses significant challenges.

This project, BATMAN, combines innovative technological, analytical and laboratory-based approaches to substantially advance our understanding of vulnerable bat species' responses to human-induced environmental changes. We will develop ultralight and self-powered wearable devices to remotely monitor real-time movements of individual bats, develop non-invasive hormone quantification procedures to assess stress responses, and conduct leading-edge social network analyses to explore long-term social structure dynamics.

This post holder will focus on development of the optimised wearable electronics (e.g. different wearable sensors and fully integrated system) for monitoring of small size of wild bats. The researcher will lead the work packages onto the design and manufacturing of wearable sensors and antenna, electronics system integration, feasibility study of energy harvesting and eventually the experimental assessments for the field testing, collaborating with our biological academics and researchers, as well as the partners from the Vincent Wildlife Trust.
