About MRUFounded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, more than 15,000 credit students choose from 13 bachelor degrees and 38 majors.
Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis," which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.
About the ProjectRemembering Alberta's Sleeping Car Porters: A Community Event, 7 March 2023
The history of sleeping car porters in Canada has been getting significant attention in recent years, including being the subject of an award-winning CBC television series and the Giller-Prize winning novel, The Sleeping Car Porter, by Calgary's Suzette Majr. Yet, the local history of porters who lived in Calgary and Edmonton -- their efforts to unionize and their significant role in the development of anti-discrimination organizations in this province -- is not widely known. Drawing upon archival materials compiled here the event in March will celebrate Alberta porters and their legacy, situating their story in the local, national, and international context.
Hosted by the Grand Theatre – the same venue that was sued for refusing service to Charles Daniels, a Black railway employee, in 1914 – this community event will feature talks by academic and community-based scholars, interspersed with clips of oral history interviews recorded with Calgary porters and their descendants, and literary and musical performances by Calgary artists.
About the RoleThis student assistant will be responsible for the design of web and publicity materials for a public event on the history of Calgary Sleeping Car Porters to be held on 7 March 2024. The maximum number of hours for this position will be 30.
