Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern Start of employment: 01.06.2023 or earliest convenience, limited for 1 year

In the case of job sharing a smaller degree of employment is possible.

As the University's competence hub for sustainability transformations, the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) fosters interdisciplinary research, implementation and teaching concerned with transformation and sustainable development. We shape our research agenda in long-standing North- South partnerships, our emphasis being on transformative science and transdisciplinary approaches. Research is at the core of our activities. However, we also have a strong record of both, hands-on implementation, education for sustainable development as well as science-policy-society engagement.

Within the SNSF-funded Biodiversa+ project INSPIRE (INtegrated Spatial PlannIng across REalms for biodiversity conservation and human development in a context of change) we are offering a 1-year research assistant position. INSPIRE aims at creating a unified decision-support framework that addresses simultaneously multiple challenges that have limited the effectiveness of conservation action in the past. The research assistant has the following duties:

  • Lead the organization of 1-2 in-person stakeholder workshops with European policy makers in Bern and/or Brussels. This includes all upfront administrative, practical, and organizational tasks (e.g. finding a workshop venue, catering, managing participant registration,...) to ensure a professional and smooth workshop(s). Depending on the candidate's interest, there is also a possibility to participate in designing the workshop content together with the project team.
  • Set up a project website in accordance with the provisions (if any) of the funding agencies.
  • Assist in conducting literature reviews and formatting project reports.
  • Requirements

The candidate should meet the following requirements:

  • MSc related to conservation or natural resource management
  • Experience in organizing a stakeholder workshop and setting up websites
  • Organizational talent
  • Ease in communicating with international policy makers
  • Keen interest in conservation topics, especially Natura2000
  • Excellent command of English, additional languages are an asset
  • We offer

  • A learning space for competences in sustainability science and global development
  • A well-networked, globally active, interdisciplinary team
  • Insights into a broad range of research and implementation projects
  • Perspectives to engage with partners from academia, civil society, the private sector and public administration
  • Employment terms commensurate with the guidelines of the Canton of Bern
  • A flexible model of annual worktime
