We are looking to appoint a part-time Research Assistant for the “Research
into online disinformation” project. This project is a major effort to
understand the prevalence and reach of disinformation in the UK media
environment, based on both automatic tracking of content produced by
disinformation sources and manual coding of major sites and forums sharing
them. The project has been ongoing since 2019. The key output is short weekly
reports aimed at senior policymakers: the main responsibility of the appointed
research assistant will be to contribute to these reports. Ideal candidates
should have demonstrable knowledge of UK politics and a keen interest in the
role of disinformation in elections & democratic life, with proven experience
writing to a high standard and delivering quickly to tight deadlines. Skills
in data analysis and coding could be an advantage though candidates without
such experience are still warmly encouraged to apply.
Applicants should be aware that they may be exposed to potentially harmful
online material (such as hate speech and misinformation) during the
execution of their project duties. Mental resilience training sessions will be
available to those taking part in the project. Applicants should also be aware
that they will be required to complete a background check before appointment.
The post holders will report to the Jonathan Bright, and should feel free to
reach out to him for any questions on clarification. The post holder will also
be invited to be part of the wider Programme on Democracy and Technology.
The positions are available immediately until the 30th of March 2022.
